Chapter 36·The Description of the Mutual Battle·Verses 1–36
The messenger, having returned, related Śiva's word to Śaṅkhacūḍa in full and exactly as it was spoken. Hearing it, the mighty lord of the dānavas readily accepted battle alone, mounted his chariot with his ministers, and ordered his army to make ready against Śaṅkara. Śiva likewise set his own hosts and the gods in motion at once, arming himself as though in sport though he is lord of all. The battle broke out amid the din of instruments, uproar, and the cries of warriors, and the hosts of gods and dānavas fought one another in due order: Mahendra against Vṛṣaparvan, the sun against Vipracitti, Viṣṇu against Dambha, Kāla against the asura Kāla, Agni against Gokarṇa, Kubera against Kālakeya, Viśvakarmā against Maya, Mṛtyu against Bhayaṅkara, Yama against Saṃhāra, Varuṇa against Kālambika, the wind-god against Cañcala, Budha against Ghaṭapṛṣṭha, Śanaiścara against Raktākṣa, Jayanta against Ratnasāra, the Vasus against the hosts of the Varcas, the Aśvins against the Dīptimats, Nalakūbara against Dhūmra, Dharma against Dhurandhara, Maṅgala against Gaṇakākṣa, Vaiśvāna against Śobhākara, and Manmatha against Pipiṭa; the twelve Ādityas together fought Gokāmukha, Cūrṇa, the asura named Khaḍga, Dhūmra, Saṃhala, Viśva, Pratāpin, and Palāśa, while the remaining gods, aided by Śiva, fought the rest of the asuras. The eleven great Rudras met the eleven fearsome asura champions, mighty in strength and valour; Mahāmaṇi fought Ugracaṇḍa and his companions; the Moon fought Rāhu, and Jupiter fought Venus; and Nandīśvara together with all the other attendants engaged the foremost dānavas, too numerous to name individually. Meanwhile Śambhu remained at the foot of the banyan tree together with Kālī's son, as the assembled hosts fought on without pause, and Śaṅkhacūḍa, richly adorned, presided from a jeweled throne surrounded by ten million dānavas. A great and crushing battle then arose, with maces, spears, paṭṭiśas, discuses, bhuśuṇḍis, lances, hammers, swords, arrows, iron clubs, javelins, and axes flashing on every side; the roaring hosts severed one another's heads; elephants, horses, chariots, and foot-soldiers together with their riders were cut to pieces; the ground was strewn with severed limbs, banners, and weapons, with fallen crowns and earrings, and with other limbs heaped up like honeycombs; headless trunks ran about, watched by the eyes of their own severed heads, springing up with weapons still raised in their arms; warriors, leaping about, fought on with every kind of weapon; some, felling their foes with gold-tipped arrows, roared out heroic war-cries like rain-clouds heavy with water; one hero completely hid another, chariot and charioteer together, beneath a covering mass of arrows, as a monsoon cloud covers the sun; single combatants closed upon one another, challenging, advancing, and striking at each other's vital points; on every side hosts of heroes bearing many arms, banners, and weapons made a lion-like roar; and conches blared as the delighted heroes leapt about. For a very long time this terrible and magnificent battle between gods and dānavas raged on, delighting the hearts of warriors — all of it, the narrator declares, merely the sport of the great Lord Śaṅkara, the Supreme Self, by which the whole universe of gods, asuras, and men alike was held in wonder.
