The sages ask Sūta to recite the Purāṇa. He retells: long ago the sages of the six families, quarrelling over what is supreme, went to Brahmā, who named Śiva as the Person beyond all principles and sent them to hold a thousand-year sacrifice on earth. Asked what the end, the means and the seeker are, Brahmā answers — the end is Śiva's state, the means is hearing, praising and reflecting on him, and the seeker is one with no craving for fruits.

Seeing what is evident with the eye, people set to work upon it; but what is not evident, having learnt it everywhere by the ear, one strives for.

Therefore hearing comes first; having heard from the teacher's mouth, the wise one of good sense should then accomplish the rest — praise and reflection.

When this means, up to reflection, has been well accomplished in order, by it union with Śiva comes about, slowly, by the steps beginning with dwelling in his world.

Afterwards the diseases of every limb, and all [worldly] joy too, dissolve; in the practice this is toil, but afterwards it is auspicious from beginning to end.
