Chapter Three · End and Means · Verses 1–27

The sages ask Sūta to recite the Purāṇa. He retells: long ago the sages of the six families, quarrelling over what is supreme, went to Brahmā, who named Śiva as the Person beyond all principles and sent them to hold a thousand-year sacrifice on earth. Asked what the end, the means and the seeker are, Brahmā answers — the end is Śiva's state, the means is hearing, praising and reflecting on him, and the seeker is one with no craving for fruits.

What need of many words here — by devotion to Śiva one is released. Devotion to the deity comes from grace, and grace arises from devotion — as here a seed from a sprout, or a sprout from a seed.

The end is the attaining of Śiva's state; its means is the serving of him; the seeker is one who, by his grace, has no craving for fruits — the daily rites and the rest.

Having done the rite taught in the Veda and offered its great fruit to him — from that comes the attaining of the supreme Lord's state, by the steps beginning with dwelling in his world.

According to each individual, the supreme fruit is for all; and its means, of many kinds, was taught by the Lord himself.

So the Śruti is our authority; by this means reach the supreme end, you who are wholly given to the one means of every purpose.

Therefore hearing comes first; having heard from the teacher's mouth, the wise one of good sense should then accomplish the rest — praise and reflection.

When this means, up to reflection, has been well accomplished in order, by it union with Śiva comes about, slowly, by the steps beginning with dwelling in his world.
