Brahmā defines the three means — hearing, praising and reflecting on Śiva — and ranks reflection highest. Sūta then tells how his teacher Vyāsa, a teacher to all the world yet without the knowledge of release, was told by Sanatkumāra that this triad is the Veda-approved means; Sanatkumāra had himself learnt it from Nandikeśvara, at Śiva's command. The seers then ask what someone unable in the triad should do.
