Chapter Five·The Greatness of the Liṅga·Verses 1–31
The sages ask why Śiva alone is worshipped in both liṅga and image, while other gods are worshipped only in an image. Sūta answers: Śiva, being the form of Brahman, is both formless and embodied, so both liṅga and image belong to him; other gods, being only embodied souls, take an image alone. He retells how Nandikeśvara taught this to Sanatkumāra, and how Śiva's liṅga first appeared as a pillar of light between the warring Brahmā and Viṣṇu.
