Chapter Eight · The Birth of Bhairava · Verses 1–66

Nandīśvara tells Sanatkumāra the story of Bhairava, Śiva's own complete form, whom the deluded fail to recognize behind the veil of Śiva's māyā — a māyā so hard to overcome that even four-armed Viṣṇu and four-faced Brahmā cannot fathom Maheśvara's greatness, and none can know him except by his own grace. Long ago the gods and sages, wishing to learn the one imperishable truth, approached Brahmā on Meru's peak; Brahmā, deluded by that māyā, declared himself the sole cause and ruler of all worlds. Viṣṇu, hearing this with equal pride, laughed and claimed the same supremacy for himself, and the two quarrelled over who was greater. To settle the dispute they questioned the four Vedas, who, remembering the true Lord, answered that Rudra-Śiva alone, the all-seeing, is the one imperishable truth. Bewildered afresh by māyā, Brahmā and Viṣṇu mocked the Vedas as senseless, unable to believe that a beggarly, ash-smeared, matted-haired wanderer who dallies with Pārvatī could be the formless supreme brahman. Then the syllable Praṇava itself took form and told them that Rudra never acts apart from his own eternal, inseparable Śakti — yet even this failed to dispel their delusion. A great light then blazed up between heaven and earth, and within it Brahmā and Viṣṇu beheld a wondrous being. Brahmā's fifth head, burning with anger at this unknown intruder, watched as the being revealed himself as the three-eyed, trident-bearing Nīlalohita; recognizing him, an arrogant, deluded Brahmā laughingly claimed Rudra as a son born long ago from his own weeping brow, and offered him shelter as a father would a child. Enraged by this prideful speech, as if to bring about universal dissolution, Śiva created out of his own fury a blazing being named Bhairava, declared him Kālabhairava, lord of time itself, and set him to punish the arrogant Brahmā, giving him the further names Āmardaka and Pāpabhakṣaṇa for his power to crush the wicked and devour the sins of devotees, and making him eternal sovereign of Kāśī, Śiva's own city of liberation, ruler and judge of every soul who dies there, their deeds recorded by Citragupta. Kālabhairava then severed Brahmā's offending fifth head with the nail of his left finger, and the terrified Viṣṇu and Brahmā, chastened, praised Śiva with the Śatarudriya hymn until their pride vanished and they understood him to be the one, unqualified, supreme brahman — being, consciousness and bliss itself. Reflecting on this, Nandīśvara declares that only by abandoning pride can one know the Lord, for Viśveśvara ever destroys pride wherever it arises. Pleased to find Brahmā and Viṣṇu freed of their conceit, Mahādeva reassured them, then turned to his own matted-haired form as Bhairava and bade him carry Brahmā's skull as an enduring vow of penance for the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa, wandering the world as a mendicant; he then created a maiden named Brahmahatyā, the sin of brahmin-slaying given form, and ordained that she follow the fierce Kālabhairava until he reached the divine city of Vārāṇasī, whereupon she would be freed to enter every other place on earth — Vārāṇasī alone remaining forever closed to her. Having thus charged Brahmahatyā with her task, the wondrous Lord Śiva vanished from sight.
