Nandīśvara continues the Bhairava-avatāra story for Sanatkumāra: after cutting off Brahmā's fifth head in the previous chapter, the fierce Kālabhairava — wearing the Kāpālika vow enjoined by Śiva himself — wanders the three worlds with skull in hand, but the sin of brahmahatyā will not leave him at any tīrtha. Wandering in this way he reaches Viṣṇu's abode; Garuḍa-bannered Viṣṇu and the gods bow to him, and Lakṣmī sends the Lord alms in a bowl named Manorathavatī. Viṣṇu praises the all-pervading, formless-yet-embodied Maheśvara who has appeared before him, and, prompted by Śiva, questions why the sovereign Lord submits to such a wandering, alms-begging existence though he is master of all and answerable to none; Bhairava explains that this fearsome vow is undertaken precisely to atone for the sin of severing Brahmā's head. Viṣṇu marvels that even remembering Śiva's name or feet dissolves the gravest sins, including brahmahatyā itself, and begs Śiva not to hide his true form behind Māyā; delighted, Bhairava grants Viṣṇu the boon of becoming a giver of boons to all gods himself, along with the boon of eternal nearness to Śiva's feet. As Bhairava sets out again for alms, Viṣṇu calls back the personified Brahmahatyā following him and pleads with her to release the trident-bearing Lord; she refuses, wishing only to purify herself by continuing to serve him and to see him again once freed from this form. Bhairava commends Viṣṇu's gracious words and grants him a boon in return, and Viṣṇu asks for nothing but the vision of the Lord he has just witnessed. Nandī then narrates how Bhairava, still pursued everywhere by Brahmahatyā, at last reaches the divine city of Vārāṇasī, upon entering which the wailing Brahmahatyā, unable to follow him there, plunges into the netherworld; simultaneously the skull falls from his hand to the ground, and the spot becomes the tīrtha called Kapālamocana ('release from the skull'). Rudra, seeing the skull released at last, dances there in supreme joy, and Nandī explains that this skull could be shed nowhere else in the world save Kāśī — hence Kāśī alone should be resorted to for release from such sin. Nandī then extols the merits of this tīrtha and of Kālabhairava's worship at Kāśī: bathing at Kapālamocana and offering tarpaṇa to gods and ancestors frees one from brahmahatyā; Bhairava himself remains seated there, devouring the accumulated sins of his devotees; whoever keeps a night-vigil fast on the dark eighth of Mārgaśīrṣa in Kālabhairava's presence, there or elsewhere, is freed from the gravest sins; the sins of countless lifetimes melt away merely at the sight of Kālabhairava, while one who wrongs his devotees suffers repeated misfortune; those devoted to Viśveśvara in Kāśī but not to Kālabhairava still meet great sorrow, and one who lives in Vārāṇasī yet neglects Bhairava's worship sees his sins wax like the moon in its bright fortnight, just as neglecting to worship Kālarāja on the appointed days makes even accumulated merit wane like the moon's dark fortnight. Finally, Nandī declares that hearing this sacred account of Bhairava's origin, which removes the sin of killing a Brahmin, frees one from every sin, and that even a person in prison or in the direst calamity is released from distress simply by hearing of Bhairava's appearance.
