Chapter Nine·Śiva Names Himself Maheśvara·Verses 1–46
Pleased by Brahmā and Viṣṇu's worship, Śiva names that day Śivarātri and tells how his pillar first appeared, at Ārdrā in Mārgaśīrṣa, on the ground that will become Aruṇācala. He revives the two armies slain in their battle, then teaches Brahmā and Viṣṇu that he alone holds both the formless (niṣkala) and embodied (sakala) natures — the pillar showing his Brahman-side, the liṅga his Lord-side — so that the liṅga, not the image, is chief in his worship.
