ये अन्ये च बहवः तत्र (ye anye ca bahavaḥ tatra) — and whatever others were there, manyand whatever others were there, many·यक्षगंधर्वराक्षसाः (yakṣagaṃdharvarākṣasāḥ) — yakṣas, gandharvas, rākṣasasyakṣas, gandharvas, rākṣasas·त्रोटिताः लुंचिताः च एव (troṭitāḥ luṃcitāḥ ca eva) — broken, torn outbroken, torn out·मृताः केचित् रणाजिरे (mṛtāḥ kecit raṇājire) — some dead on the battlefieldsome dead on the battlefield

यज्ञं तथाविधं दृष्ट्वा (yajñaṃ tathāvidhaṃ dṛṣṭvā) — seeing the sacrifice in such a stateseeing the sacrifice in such a state·समाहूय गणाधिपम् (samāhūya gaṇādhipam) — having summoned the lord of the gaṇashaving summoned the lord of the gaṇas·वीरभद्रं महावीर्यम् (vīrabhadraṃ mahāvīryam) — to the mighty Vīrabhadrato the mighty Vīrabhadra·उवाच प्रहसन् प्रभुः (uvāca prahasan prabhuḥ) — the Lord spoke, laughingthe Lord spoke, laughing

विशिरस्कं च तं दृष्ट्वा (viśiraskaṃ ca taṃ dṛṣṭvā) — seeing that headless oneseeing that headless one·शंकरः लोकशंकरः (śaṃkaraḥ lokaśaṃkaraḥ) — Śaṅkara, the world's well-wisherŚaṅkara, the world's well-wisher·वीरभद्रम् उवाच अग्रे (vīrabhadram uvāca agre) — spoke before Vīrabhadraspoke before Vīrabhadra·विहसन् मुनिसत्तम (vihasan munisattama) — laughing, O best of sageslaughing, O best of sages

शिरः कुत्र इति (śiraḥ kutra iti) — "where is the head?""where is the head?"·तेन उक्तं (tena uktaṃ) — asked by himasked by him·वीरभद्रः अब्रवीत् प्रभुः (vīrabhadraḥ abravīt prabhuḥ) — the Lord Vīrabhadra saidthe Lord Vīrabhadra said·मया शिरः हुतं च अग्नौ (mayā śiraḥ hutaṃ ca agnau) — the head was offered by me into the firethe head was offered by me into the fire·तदानीम् एव शंकर (tadānīm eva śaṃkara) — at that very moment, O Śaṅkaraat that very moment, O Śaṅkara

इति श्रुत्वा वचः तस्य वीरभद्रस्य (iti śrutvā vacaḥ tasya vīrabhadrasya) — hearing these words of Vīrabhadrahearing these words of Vīrabhadra·शंकरः (śaṃkaraḥ) — ŚaṅkaraŚaṅkara·देवान् तथा आज्ञपत् प्रीत्या (devān tathā ājñapat prītyā) — lovingly commanded the gods thuslovingly commanded the gods thus·यत् उक्तं तत् पुरा प्रभुः (yat uktaṃ tat purā prabhuḥ) — what the Lord had said beforewhat the Lord had said before

संधीयमाने शिरसि (saṃdhīyamāne śirasi) — as the head was being joinedas the head was being joined·शंभुसद्दृष्टिवीक्षितः (śaṃbhusaddṛṣṭivīkṣitaḥ) — seen by Śambhu's gracious glanceseen by Śambhu's gracious glance·सद्यः सुप्तः इव उत्तस्थौ (sadyaḥ suptaḥ iva uttasthau) — rose up at once, as one asleeprose up at once, as one asleep·लब्धप्राणः प्रजापतिः (labdhaprāṇaḥ prajāpatiḥ) — Prajāpati, his life restoredPrajāpati, his life restored

उत्थितः च अग्रतः (utthitaḥ ca agrataḥ) — having risen, before himhaving risen, before him·शंभुं ददर्श करुणानिधिम् (śaṃbhuṃ dadarśa karuṇānidhim) — beheld Śambhu, the ocean of compassionbeheld Śambhu, the ocean of compassion·दक्षः प्रीतमतिः प्रीत्या (dakṣaḥ prītamatiḥ prītyā) — Dakṣa, his mind delighted, with loveDakṣa, his mind delighted, with love·संस्थितः सुप्रसन्नधीः (saṃsthitaḥ suprasannadhīḥ) — remained there, his understanding well pleasedremained there, his understanding well pleased

भवं स्तोतुमनाः सः अथ (bhavaṃ stotumanāḥ saḥ atha) — wishing then to praise Bhavawishing then to praise Bhava·न अशक्नोत् अनुरागतः (na aśaknot anurāgataḥ) — could not, out of lovecould not, out of love·उत्कण्ठाविकलत्वात् च (utkaṇṭhāvikalatvāt ca) — and from being overcome by longingand from being overcome by longing·संपरेतां सुतां स्मरन् (saṃparetāṃ sutāṃ smaran) — remembering his daughter who had passed awayremembering his daughter who had passed away

अनुग्रहः कृतः ते हि (anugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ te hi) — grace has indeed been shown by yougrace has indeed been shown by you·दंडव्याजेन शंकर (daṃḍavyājena śaṃkara) — under the guise of punishment, O Śaṅkaraunder the guise of punishment, O Śaṅkara·खलः अहं मूढधीः देव (khalaḥ ahaṃ mūḍhadhīḥ deva) — I am wicked, of deluded mind, O godI am wicked, of deluded mind, O god·ज्ञातं तत्त्वं मया न ते (jñātaṃ tattvaṃ mayā na te) — your true nature was not known by meyour true nature was not known by me

साधूनां कल्पवृक्षः त्वं (sādhūnāṃ kalpavṛkṣaḥ tvaṃ) — you are the wish-fulfilling tree of the goodyou are the wish-fulfilling tree of the good·दुष्टानां दंडधृक् सदा (duṣṭānāṃ daṃḍadhṛk sadā) — ever the wielder of the rod against the wickedever the wielder of the rod against the wicked·स्वतन्त्रः परमात्मा हि (svatantraḥ paramātmā hi) — the independent supreme soul indeedthe independent supreme soul indeed·भक्ताभीष्टवरप्रदः (bhaktābhīṣṭavarapradaḥ) — the granter of the boons desired by devoteesthe granter of the boons desired by devotees

विद्यातपोव्रतधरान् (vidyātapovratadharān) — bearers of knowledge, austerity, and vowsbearers of knowledge, austerity, and vows·असृजः प्रथमं द्विजान् (asṛjaḥ prathamaṃ dvijān) — you created first the twice-bornyou created first the twice-born·आत्मतत्त्वं समावेत्तुं (ātmatattvaṃ samāvettuṃ) — that they might come to know the truth of the Selfthat they might come to know the truth of the Self·मुखतः परमेश्वरः (mukhataḥ parameśvaraḥ) — from your own mouth, O supreme lordfrom your own mouth, O supreme lord

सर्वापद्भ्यः पालयिता (sarvāpadbhyaḥ pālayitā) — the protector from all calamitiesthe protector from all calamities·गोपतिः तु पशून् इव (gopatiḥ tu paśūn iva) — like a cowherd [protecting] his cattlelike a cowherd [protecting] his cattle·गृहीतदंडः दुष्टान् तान् (gṛhītadaṃḍaḥ duṣṭān tān) — having taken up the rod against those wicked oneshaving taken up the rod against those wicked ones·मर्यादापरिपालकः (maryādāparipālakaḥ) — the guardian of due orderthe guardian of due order

सः भवान् भगवान् शंभो (saḥ bhavān bhagavān śaṃbho) — you, O Śambhu, are that Lordyou, O Śambhu, are that Lord·दीनबंधो परात्परः (dīnabaṃdho parātparaḥ) — O friend of the humble, beyond the highestO friend of the humble, beyond the highest·स्वकृतेन महार्हेण (svakṛtena mahārheṇa) — by my own worship, however grandby my own worship, however grand·संतुष्टः भक्तवत्सल (saṃtuṣṭaḥ bhaktavatsala) — be satisfied, O lover of your devoteesbe satisfied, O lover of your devotees

इति स्तुत्वा महेशानं (iti stutvā maheśānaṃ) — having thus praised Maheśānahaving thus praised Maheśāna·शंकरं लोकशंकरम् (śaṃkaraṃ lokaśaṃkaram) — Śaṅkara, the well-wisher of the worldŚaṅkara, the well-wisher of the world·प्रजापतिः विनीतात्मा (prajāpatiḥ vinītātmā) — Prajāpati, his soul humbledPrajāpati, his soul humbled·विरराम महाप्रभुम् (virarāma mahāprabhum) — fell silent before the great lordfell silent before the great lord

अथ विष्णुः प्रसन्नात्मा (atha viṣṇuḥ prasannātmā) — then Viṣṇu, his soul delightedthen Viṣṇu, his soul delighted·तुष्टाव वृषभध्वजम् (tuṣṭāva vṛṣabhadhvajam) — praised the bull-bannered onepraised the bull-bannered one·बाष्पगद्गदया वाण्या (bāṣpagadgadayā vāṇyā) — in a voice choked with tearsin a voice choked with tears·सुप्रणम्य कृताञ्जलिः (supraṇamya kṛtāñjaliḥ) — having duly bowed, hands joinedhaving duly bowed, hands joined

महादेव महेशान (mahādeva maheśāna) — O Mahādeva, O MaheśānaO Mahādeva, O Maheśāna·लोकानुग्रहकारक (lokānugrahakāraka) — O bestower of grace upon the worldO bestower of grace upon the world·परब्रह्म परात्मा त्वं (parabrahma parātmā tvaṃ) — you are the supreme Brahman, the highest selfyou are the supreme Brahman, the highest self·दीनबंधो दयानिधे (dīnabaṃdho dayānidhe) — O friend of the humble, O treasury of compassionO friend of the humble, O treasury of compassion

सर्वव्यापी स्वैरवर्ती (sarvavyāpī svairavartī) — all-pervading, moving by your own free willall-pervading, moving by your own free will·वेदवेद्ययशाः प्रभो (vedavedyayaśāḥ prabho) — O Lord, whose glory is known through the VedasO Lord, whose glory is known through the Vedas·अनुग्रहः कृतः तेन (anugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ tena) — grace has been shown by thatgrace has been shown by that·कृताः च असुकृता वयम् (kṛtāḥ ca asukṛtā vayam) — and we have become truly blessedand we have become truly blessed

दक्षः अयं मम भक्तः (dakṣaḥ ayaṃ mama bhaktaḥ) — this Dakṣa is my devoteethis Dakṣa is my devotee·त्वां यत् निनिंद खलः पुरा (tvāṃ yat niniṃda khalaḥ purā) — who wickedly reviled you beforewho wickedly reviled you before·तत् क्षन्तव्यं महेश अद्य (tat kṣantavyaṃ maheśa adya) — that should be forgiven, O Maheśa, todaythat should be forgiven, O Maheśa, today·निर्विकारः यतः भवान् (nirvikāraḥ yataḥ bhavān) — since you are without changesince you are without change

कृतः मया अपराधः अपि (kṛtaḥ mayā aparādhaḥ api) — an offense too was committed by mean offense too was committed by me·तव शंकर मौढ्यतः (tava śaṃkara mauḍhyataḥ) — against you, O Śaṅkara, out of follyagainst you, O Śaṅkara, out of folly·त्वद्गणेन कृतं युद्धं (tvadgaṇena kṛtaṃ yuddhaṃ) — a battle fought with your gaṇaa battle fought with your gaṇa·वीरभद्रेण पक्षतः (vīrabhadreṇa pakṣataḥ) — with Vīrabhadra, taking sideswith Vīrabhadra, taking sides

त्वं मे स्वामी परब्रह्म (tvaṃ me svāmī parabrahma) — you are my master, the supreme Brahmanyou are my master, the supreme Brahman·दासः अहं ते सदाशिव (dāsaḥ ahaṃ te sadāśiva) — I am your servant, O SadāśivaI am your servant, O Sadāśiva·पोष्यः च अपि सदा ते (poṣyaḥ ca api sadā te) — and I too am to be nourished by you alwaysand I too am to be nourished by you always·हि सर्वेषां त्वं पिता यतः (hi sarveṣāṃ tvaṃ pitā yataḥ) — since you are the father of allsince you are the father of all

देवदेव महादेव (devadeva mahādeva) — O god of gods, O MahādevaO god of gods, O Mahādeva·करुणासागर प्रभो (karuṇāsāgara prabho) — O ocean of compassion, O LordO ocean of compassion, O Lord·स्वतन्त्रः परमात्मा त्वं (svatantraḥ paramātmā tvaṃ) — you are the independent supreme soulyou are the independent supreme soul·परमेशः अद्वयः अव्ययः (parameśaḥ advayaḥ avyayaḥ) — the supreme lord, without a second, imperishablethe supreme lord, without a second, imperishable

मम पुत्रोपरि (mama putropari) — upon my sonupon my son·कृतः देवानुग्रह ईश्वर (kṛtaḥ devānugraha īśvara) — grace has been shown by [you,] the god, O Lordgrace has been shown by [you,] the god, O Lord·स्वापमानम् अगणयन् (svāpamānam agaṇayan) — not regarding your own dishonournot regarding your own dishonour·दक्षयज्ञं समुद्धर (dakṣayajñaṃ samuddhara) — restore Dakṣa's sacrificerestore Dakṣa's sacrifice

प्रसन्नः भव देवेश (prasannaḥ bhava deveśa) — be gracious, O lord of the godsbe gracious, O lord of the gods·सर्वशापान् निराकुरु (sarvaśāpān nirākuru) — remove every curseremove every curse·सुबोधः प्रेरकः त्वं मे (subodhaḥ prerakaḥ tvaṃ me) — you are the wise one, my inspireryou are the wise one, my inspirer·त्वम् एव विनिवारकः (tvam eva vinivārakaḥ) — you alone are the one who wards it offyou alone are the one who wards it off

इति स्तुत्वा महेशानं (iti stutvā maheśānaṃ) — having thus praised Maheśānahaving thus praised Maheśāna·परमं च महामुने (paramaṃ ca mahāmune) — the supreme one, O great sagethe supreme one, O great sage·कृताञ्जलिपुटः भूत्वा (kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ bhūtvā) — having joined hands in reverencehaving joined hands in reverence·विनम्रीकृतमस्तकः (vinamrīkṛtamastakaḥ) — my head bowed lowmy head bowed low

अथ शक्रादयः देवाः (atha śakrādayaḥ devāḥ) — then Indra and the other godsthen Indra and the other gods·लोकपालाः सुचेतसः (lokapālāḥ sucetasaḥ) — the guardians of the world, well-disposedthe guardians of the world, well-disposed·तुष्टुवुः शंकरं देवं (tuṣṭuvuḥ śaṃkaraṃ devaṃ) — praised the god Śaṅkarapraised the god Śaṅkara·प्रसन्नमुखपंकजम् (prasannamukhapaṃkajam) — his lotus face full of gracehis lotus face full of grace

ततः प्रसन्नमनसः (tataḥ prasannamanasaḥ) — then, their minds delightedthen, their minds delighted·सर्वे देवाः तथा परे (sarve devāḥ tathā pare) — all the [other] gods tooall the [other] gods too·सिद्धर्षयः प्रजेशाः च (siddharṣayaḥ prajeśāḥ ca) — the accomplished sages and the lords of creaturesthe accomplished sages and the lords of creatures·तुष्टुवुः शंकरं मुदा (tuṣṭuvuḥ śaṃkaraṃ mudā) — praised Śaṅkara with joypraised Śaṅkara with joy

तथा उपदेवनागाः च (tathā upadevanāgāḥ ca) — and likewise the upa-devas and nāgasand likewise the upa-devas and nāgas·सदस्याः ब्राह्मणाः तथा (sadasyāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tathā) — the sadasyas, and the brāhmaṇasthe sadasyas, and the brāhmaṇas·प्रणम्य परया भक्त्या (praṇamya parayā bhaktyā) — having bowed with supreme devotionhaving bowed with supreme devotion·तुष्टुवुः च पृथक् पृथक् (tuṣṭuvuḥ ca pṛthak pṛthak) — each praised him separatelyeach praised him separately
