Chapter 27 · The Brahmacārī's Deceptive Speech · Verses 1–39

Pārvatī assures the disguised Śiva that everything her companion Vijayā has said is true — that she has, in mind, word, and deed, chosen Śaṅkara alone as her husband, and continues her austerity out of the mind's own longing, however difficult it may be to fulfil. Hearing this, Brahmā relates, the brāhmaṇa falls silent for a moment, then explains that his own great curiosity has at last been satisfied by hearing it from her own lips, and, since their exchange has now made them friends, prepares to take his leave. Pārvatī begs him to stay and speak what is good for her, and the brāhmaṇa, pausing at her request, agrees — if she truly wishes to hear it out of devotion — to describe Mahādeva's nature fully and truly. What follows is an extended, deliberately provocative catalogue of Śiva's inauspicious attributes: his bull-mount, ash-smeared and matted-haired body, tiger-skin and elephant-hide garments, skull and serpents, poison-smeared throat, misshapen eyes, unknown birth, homelessness, ten arms, and constant company of ghosts and spirits. He questions why she, a jewel among women and a king's daughter, should seek so unsuitable a husband through such fierce austerity — comparing her choice to trading gold for glass, sandal for mud, sunlight for a firefly's glow, and fine silk for hide — and to abandoning home, wealth, and the protection of Indra and the other world-guardians for a homeless beggar. He draws out, point by point, the utter incongruity between her own loveliness and Śiva's fearsome form — her lotus eyes against his three, her single moon face against his five, her jewelled ornaments against his serpents, her sweet music against his fearsome drums and horn — and recalls how Śiva burned Kāma and abandoned Satī to shame after Dakṣa's insult, how his lineage, learning, and character are all unknown or suspect, and how, ever solitary and dispassionate, he is wholly unfit to have his mind joined to hers. Whatever is base or unworthy, the brāhmaṇa declares, is exactly what she is pursuing; let her turn her mind from it — or else do as she pleases. Hearing this torrent of denunciation, Brahmā relates, Pārvatī, her mind now filled with anger, turns to answer the brāhmaṇa who has so reviled Śiva.
