When those sages had departed to their own worlds, Śiva himself resolved to test Girijā's austerity. Assuming, under this pretext, the form of an extremely aged brāhmaṇa — radiant of body, joyful at heart, bearing a staff and umbrella — he went to her forest grove and found her, pure and resplendent, seated upon her altar amid her companions like the very embodiment of accomplished austerity. Approaching her with love in the guise of a brahmacārī, he was honoured with full ceremony, and Pārvatī, in turn, inquired after his welfare. Asked who he was, the disguised Śiva described himself merely as an aged, wandering ascetic who benefits others, and then pressed her with searching, deliberately provocative questions — who she was, whose daughter, why she practised such fearsome austerity alone in the forest without a husband, whether some ascetic neglected her, and which goddess she might secretly be. Pārvatī answered plainly: she was the daughter of the Himālaya, once Dakṣa's daughter Satī, who had renounced her body when her father insulted her husband; reborn as Pārvatī and having won Śiva again through fate's favour, she had been left when, having reduced Kāma to ashes, he departed; she had therefore come to the bank of the golden river to practise fierce austerity, and, her wish still unfulfilled after long endeavour, was on the point of entering fire when the brāhmaṇa's appearance stayed her for a moment — yet she declared she would still enter the flames, resolving to choose Śiva as her husband in whatever birth she took. As she moved to enter the fire despite his repeated forbidding, the flames turned cool as sandal-paste through the power of her austerity; pausing an instant as she rose toward the sky, the disguised Śiva smilingly questioned her again, remarking that her body remained unburnt and her wish ungranted, and pressed her, as a friend, to reveal candidly her true purpose, marvelling that she should abandon such beauty and fine garments for hides and hardship. At Pārvatī's bidding, her devoted companion Vijayā then took up the account and, addressing the matted-haired ascetic, related in full her mistress's story: her lineage as the Himālaya's daughter, her unwavering resolve for three thousand years never to accept anyone but Śiva, the trees she had once planted now bursting into flower and fruit as a sign her longing would be fulfilled, and how, by Nārada's own command, she had undertaken this severe austerity for the sake of her beauty, her father's honour, and Kāma's redemption, fixing her whole mind upon Maheśa. Having heard Vijayā's earnest account, the matted-haired Rudra, laughing, declared it seemed mere jest, and asked that the goddess confirm it with her own lips — at which Pārvatī herself began to speak directly to the disguised brāhmaṇa.

And if austerity performed for another's sake still stands firm, that too is austerity indeed — but it is as if one had taken a jewel in hand, then cast it aside and gathered up glass instead.
NoteThe printed reading "तपश्चेद्धि तिष्ठेत्तु" carries an unusual conjunct construction; it is reproduced exactly as printed. The verse's two statements are joined elliptically in the source, without an explicit connective, and are rendered here following the sense conveyed by the accompanying Hindi commentary.
