इदं मनो हि सुदृढम् (idaṃ mano hi sudṛḍham) — this mind of mine, exceedingly firmthis mind of mine, exceedingly firm·अवशं परकर्मकृत् (avaśaṃ parakarmakṛt) — uncontrolled, doing another's workuncontrolled, doing another's work·जलोपरि महाभित्तिं (jalopari mahābhittiṃ) — a great wall upon watera great wall upon water·चिकीर्षति महोन्नताम् (cikīrṣati mahonnatām) — wishes to raise, exceedingly loftywishes to raise, exceedingly lofty

सुरर्षेः शासनं प्राप्य (surarṣeḥ śāsanaṃ prāpya) — having obtained the command of the divine sagehaving obtained the command of the divine sage·करोमि सुदृढं तपः (karomi sudṛḍhaṃ tapaḥ) — I perform the most rigorous austerityI perform the most rigorous austerity·रुद्रः पतिर्भवेन्मे हि (rudraḥ patirbhavenme hi) — 'let Rudra become my husband''let Rudra become my husband'·विधायेति मनोरथम् (vidhāyeti manoratham) — with this wish in mindwith this wish in mind

न ज्ञातं तस्य चरितं (na jñātaṃ tasya caritaṃ) — his character was not knownhis character was not known·वृथापण्डितमानिनः (vṛthāpaṇḍitamāninaḥ) — by you, vainly considering yourself learnedby you, vainly considering yourself learned·देवर्षेः क्रूरमनसः (devarṣeḥ krūramanasaḥ) — of that cruel-minded divine sageof that cruel-minded divine sage·सुज्ञा भूत्वाप्यगात्मजे (sujñā bhūtvāpyagātmaje) — even though wise, O daughter of the mountaineven though wise, O daughter of the mountain

नारदः कूटवादी च (nāradaḥ kūṭavādī ca) — Nārada is a false speakerNārada is a false speaker·परचित्तप्रमंथकः (paracittapramaṃthakaḥ) — and a disturber of others' mindsand a disturber of others' minds·तस्य वार्ताश्रवणतो (tasya vārtāśravaṇato) — from merely hearing news of himfrom merely hearing news of him·हानिर्भवति सर्वथा (hānirbhavati sarvathā) — harm results in every wayharm results in every way

तत्र त्वं शृणु सद्बुद्ध्या (tatra tvaṃ śṛṇu sadbuddhyā) — hear now, with a good mindhear now, with a good mind·चेतिहासं सुशोभितम् (cetihāsaṃ suśobhitam) — this well-adorned tale about himthis well-adorned tale about him·क्रमात्त्वां बोधयंतो हि (kramāttvāṃ bodhayaṃto hi) — as we instruct you step by stepas we instruct you step by step·प्रीत्या तमुपधारय (prītyā tamupadhāraya) — hold it in your heart with lovehold it in your heart with love

कूटोपदेशमाश्राव्य (kūṭopadeśamāśrāvya) — having made them hear a false teachinghaving made them hear a false teaching·तत्र तान्नारदो मुनिः (tatra tānnārado muniḥ) — there, that sage Nāradathere, that sage Nārada·तदाज्ञया च ते सर्वे (tadājñayā ca te sarve) — and by that command, all of themand by that command, all of them·पितुर्न गृहमाययुः (piturna gṛhamāyayuḥ) — never returned to their father's housenever returned to their father's house

तच्छुत्वा कुपितो दक्षः (tacchutvā kupito dakṣaḥ) — hearing this, angered Dakṣahearing this, angered Dakṣa·पित्राश्वासितमानसः (pitrāśvāsitamānasaḥ) — his mind consoled by his fatherhis mind consoled by his father·उत्पाद्य पुत्रान्प्रायुङ्क्त (utpādya putrānprāyuṅkta) — then begot and set to the task sonsthen begot and set to the task sons·सहस्त्रप्रमितांस्ततः (sahastrapramitāṃstataḥ) — numbering a thousandnumbering a thousand

इत्थं नारदसद्वृत्तिः (itthaṃ nāradasadvṛttir) — thus is Nārada's true conductthus is Nārada's true conduct·विश्रुता शैलकन्यके (viśrutā śailakanyake) — well known, O daughter of the mountainwell known, O daughter of the mountain·अन्यां शृणु हि तद्वृत्तिं (anyāṃ śṛṇu hi tadvṛttiṃ) — hear also another conduct of hishear also another conduct of his·वैराग्यकरणीं नृणाम् (vairāgyakaraṇīṃ nṛṇām) — that brings detachment to menthat brings detachment to men

लब्ध्वा तदुपदेशं हि (labdhvā tadupadeśaṃ hi) — having obtained his teachinghaving obtained his teaching·त्वमपि प्राज्ञसंमता (tvamapi prājñasaṃmatā) — even you, though esteemed as wiseeven you, though esteemed as wise·वृथैव मूर्खीभूता त्वं (vṛthaiva mūrkhībhūtā tvaṃ) — have needlessly become foolishhave needlessly become foolish·तपश्चरसि दुष्करम् (tapaścarasi duṣkaram) — and perform this most difficult austerityand perform this most difficult austerity

तेन ते कारयिष्यामो (tena te kārayiṣyāmo) — we shall have your marriage performed with himwe shall have your marriage performed with him·विवाहं सर्वसौख्यदम् (vivāhaṃ sarvasaukhyadam) — which brings every happinesswhich brings every happiness·इतीदृशं त्यज हठं (itīdṛśaṃ tyaja haṭhaṃ) — abandon such obstinacy as thisabandon such obstinacy as this·सुखिता भव पार्वति (sukhitā bhava pārvati) — and be happy, O Pārvatīand be happy, O Pārvatī

स्वतनोः शैलजातत्वात् (svatanoḥ śailajātatvāt) — since my own body is born of the mountainsince my own body is born of the mountain·काठिन्यं सहजं स्थितम् (kāṭhinyaṃ sahajaṃ sthitam) — hardness abides naturally in ithardness abides naturally in it·इत्थं विचार्य सुधिया (itthaṃ vicārya sudhiyā) — considering this with a good mindconsidering this with a good mind·मां निषेद्धुं न चार्हथ (māṃ niṣeddhuṃ na cārhatha) — you ought not to forbid meyou ought not to forbid me

धर्मजात्यादिभिः शम्भुः (dharmajātyādibhiḥ śambhur) — by caste, birth, and the like, Śambhuby caste, birth, and the like, Śambhu·नानुगृह्णाति वै द्विजाः (nānugṛhṇāti vai dvijāḥ) — shows favour to none, O twice-bornshows favour to none, O twice-born·गुरोरनुग्रहेणैव (guroranugraheṇaiva) — it is only through the guru's graceit is only through the guru's grace·शिवं जानामि तत्त्वतः (śivaṃ jānāmi tattvataḥ) — that I truly know Śivathat I truly know Śiva

चेच्छिवः स हि मे विप्रा (cecchivaḥ sa hi me viprā) — if Śiva, O brāhmaṇasif Śiva, O brāhmaṇas·विवाहं न करिष्यति (vivāhaṃ na kariṣyati) — will not marry mewill not marry me·अविवाहा सदाहं स्यां (avivāhā sadāhaṃ syāṃ) — then I shall remain unmarried foreverthen I shall remain unmarried forever·सत्यं सत्यं वदाम्यहम् (satyaṃ satyaṃ vadāmyaham) — I speak the truth, the truthI speak the truth, the truth

उदयति यदि भानुः पश्चिमे दिग्विभागे (udayati yadi bhānuḥ paścime digvibhāge) — even should the sun rise in the western quartereven should the sun rise in the western quarter·प्रचलति यदि मेरुः शीततां याति वह्निः (pracalati yadi meruḥ śītatāṃ yāti vahniḥ) — even should Meru move, even should fire turn coldeven should Meru move, even should fire turn cold·विकसति यदि पद्मं पर्वताग्रे शिलायां (vikasati yadi padmaṃ parvatāgre śilāyāṃ) — even should a lotus bloom on a rock at a mountain's peakeven should a lotus bloom on a rock at a mountain's peak·न हि चलति हठो मे सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीमि (na hi calati haṭho me satyametad bravīmi) — my resolve shall not waver — this I speak in truthmy resolve shall not waver — this I speak in truth

इत्युक्त्वा तान्प्रणम्याशु (ityuktvā tānpraṇamyāśu) — having said this and quickly bowedhaving said this and quickly bowed·मुनीन्सा पर्वतात्मजा (munīnsā parvatātmajā) — to those sages, the daughter of the mountainto those sages, the daughter of the mountain·विरराम शिवं स्मृत्वा (virarāma śivaṃ smṛtvā) — fell silent, calling Śiva to mindfell silent, calling Śiva to mind·निर्विकारेण चेतसा (nirvikāreṇa cetasā) — with an unchanging heartwith an unchanging heart
