Chapter Twelve · The Holy Fields · Verses 1–43

Sūta names the great rivers of Bhārata — the Sindhu, Sarasvatī, Gaṅgā, Narmadā, Godāvarī, Kṛṣṇā-Veṇī, Tuṅgabhadrā, Kāverī and others — with the number of mouths of each and the zodiacal season that makes bathing there most fruitful. He warns that sin done in a holy field grows all the graver, then closes with a teaching on how sin and merit each carry a seed, a growth, and an enjoyment portion, and the different means — knowledge, giving, austerity, recitation — by which each is undone.

“It grants Śiva's world,” so Śiva himself declared, long ago. One should bathe in the Yamunā and the Śoṇa when Jupiter, [and] the sun, are in Virgo.
