Sūta names the great rivers of Bhārata — the Sindhu, Sarasvatī, Gaṅgā, Narmadā, Godāvarī, Kṛṣṇā-Veṇī, Tuṅgabhadrā, Kāverī and others — with the number of mouths of each and the zodiacal season that makes bathing there most fruitful. He warns that sin done in a holy field grows all the graver, then closes with a teaching on how sin and merit each carry a seed, a growth, and an enjoyment portion, and the different means — knowledge, giving, austerity, recitation — by which each is undone.

And likewise, mental [merit], brahmins, destroys sin of the same kind. But a mental [sin] is like a coat of adamant, following one from kalpa to kalpa.

Only by meditation does it perish; it comes to no destruction otherwise. Sin of speech [is destroyed] by a web of recitation; sin of the body, by the wasting of the body [in austerity].

Sin done through wealth perishes by giving; otherwise not even by ten million kalpas. Sometimes merit too is destroyed by sin that has grown greater than it.

Of merit and of sin alike there is a seed-portion, a growth-portion, and an enjoyment-portion. The seed-portion is destroyed by knowledge; the growth [is destroyed] in the manner just told.

The enjoyment-portion is destroyed only by being enjoyed, not otherwise, not even by ten million merits. But when the seed's sprouting is destroyed, what remains still serves for enjoyment.

By the worship of the gods, and by giving to brahmins, and by an excess of austerity, in time the [remaining] enjoyment [of sin] becomes bearable for men. Therefore one who wishes for happiness should dwell only without committing sin at all.
