Chapter Twelve · The Holy Fields · Verses 1–43

Sūta names the great rivers of Bhārata — the Sindhu, Sarasvatī, Gaṅgā, Narmadā, Godāvarī, Kṛṣṇā-Veṇī, Tuṅgabhadrā, Kāverī and others — with the number of mouths of each and the zodiacal season that makes bathing there most fruitful. He warns that sin done in a holy field grows all the graver, then closes with a teaching on how sin and merit each carry a seed, a growth, and an enjoyment portion, and the different means — knowledge, giving, austerity, recitation — by which each is undone.

Hear, wise sages, of the field of Śiva, the giver of release; and its scriptures too I shall then declare, for the sole purpose of protecting the world.

Bathing at each such ford, in its own month, grants Indra's state. The wise man should dwell, taking refuge in the Gaṅgā, or in the Sahya-born [Kāverī]; then the sin done up to that time is surely destroyed.

Between the two there are, in abundance, fields that give merit too. Dwelling here and there in them, a wise man gains fruit of the same kind.

By good conduct, by good livelihood, and always by right feeling too, the compassionate, wise man should dwell there; not otherwise does he gain that fruit.

Merit done in a holy field grows in manifold ways; sin done in a holy field, even a small one, becomes great.

If one there and then resolves to live [by right means], by merit [the past sin] comes to be destroyed. Merit, they declare — of the body, and of speech likewise — is the giver of lordship.

Of merit and of sin alike there is a seed-portion, a growth-portion, and an enjoyment-portion. The seed-portion is destroyed by knowledge; the growth [is destroyed] in the manner just told.

By the worship of the gods, and by giving to brahmins, and by an excess of austerity, in time the [remaining] enjoyment [of sin] becomes bearable for men. Therefore one who wishes for happiness should dwell only without committing sin at all.
