Sūta answers the sages' question on how a liṅga is installed: its materials and measure, fixed and movable kinds, the consecration with the sadyojāta mantras, the sixteen rites of its worship, and the japa-counts of the praṇava and the pañcākṣara that grant Śiva's state. He sets out the bounds of a holy field around a liṅga of each kind, and the merit of dwelling, dying, or offering the ancestral rites there. The chapter closes with the sages asking him to name the holy fields themselves.
