अथ सप्तमोऽध्यायः

Śiva greets the gods and says he already knew of the battle between Brahmā and Viṣṇu. He sets out on a shining chariot with Pārvatī, his sons, his hosts and the gods, and watches the fight hidden in the sky. When the two warriors hurl their great weapons and the three worlds begin to burn, Śiva stands between them as a huge, fearful pillar of fire, and the weapons fall quiet. Amazed, the two agree to find its top and its base. Viṣṇu goes down as a boar and comes back tired, having found nothing. Brahmā goes up as a swan and meets a ketakī flower that has been falling from the pillar for ages without seeing its start. He talks the flower into bearing false witness, and before Viṣṇu he claims he saw the top. Viṣṇu believes him and worships him. Then Śiva comes out of the pillar in bodily form to punish the deceit. Viṣṇu, trembling, holds his feet and asks pardon. Śiva is pleased with Viṣṇu's truthfulness, grants him equal honour with himself, and promises him his own shrines and festivals. शिव देवताओंका कुशल पूछते हैं और कहते हैं कि ब्रह्मा और विष्णुके युद्धकी बात उन्हें पहलेसे ज्ञात थी। वे पार्वती, पुत्रों, गणों और देवताओंके साथ एक दिव्य रथपर चलते हैं और आकाशमें छिपकर युद्ध देखते हैं। जब दोनों वीर महान् अस्त्र छोड़ते हैं और तीनों लोक जलने लगते हैं, तब शिव उनके बीच एक विशाल, भयंकर अग्निस्तम्भ बनकर खड़े हो जाते हैं और अस्त्र शान्त हो जाते हैं। चकित होकर दोनों उसका ऊपरी छोर और जड़ खोजनेका निश्चय करते हैं। विष्णु सूकर बनकर नीचे जाते हैं और कुछ न पाकर थके हुए लौट आते हैं। ब्रह्मा हंस बनकर ऊपर जाते हैं और उन्हें केतकीका एक फूल मिलता है, जो युगोंसे स्तम्भसे गिर रहा है पर उसका आदि नहीं देख सका। ब्रह्मा उसे झूठी गवाही देनेको मना लेते हैं और विष्णुके सामने कहते हैं कि उन्होंने स्तम्भका अग्रभाग देख लिया। विष्णु उनकी बात मानकर उनकी पूजा करते हैं। तब छलका दण्ड देनेके लिये शिव स्तम्भसे साकार प्रकट होते हैं। विष्णु काँपते हाथोंसे उनके चरण पकड़कर क्षमा माँगते हैं। शिव विष्णुकी सत्यनिष्ठासे प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें अपने समान सम्मान देते हैं और उनके अलग मन्दिरों तथा उत्सवोंका वर देते हैं।
