Hearing from his fleeing gaṇas of Satī's self-immolation and Dakṣa's insult, the enraged Śiva tears out a lock of his own matted hair, producing the mighty Vīrabhadra and the terrible Mahākālī along with hundreds of fevers. Vīrabhadra offers himself for any task, however vast; Śiva blesses him and commands him, with Mahākālī, to burn Dakṣa's sacrifice to ashes along with everyone present, sparing no god who has wronged him.
