Chapter 31 · The Voice from the Sky · Verses 1–37

अथैकत्रिंशोऽध्यायः

In the sacrificial pavilion, a voice from the sky rebukes Dakṣa for his contempt of Satī and Śiva, praises Satī and Śiva at length, and warns the gods and sages to leave the sacrifice at once or share in its destruction. यज्ञमण्डपमें आकाशवाणीद्वारा दक्षको फटकारना तथा देवताओंको सावधान करना

ब्रह्मोवाच — Brahmā spoke: ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा:

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र नभोवाणी मुनीश्वर। अवोचच्छृण्वतां दक्षसुरादीनां यथार्थतः॥

etasminnantare tatra nabhovāṇī munīśvara | avocacchṛṇvatāṃ dakṣasurādīnāṃ yathārthataḥ ||

· हिन्दी

हे मुनीश्वर! इसी बीच वहाँ आकाशवाणी हुई, जो दक्ष तथा देवता आदिको सुनाते हुए यथार्थ बात कह रही थी।

Meanwhile, O lord of sages, a voice from the sky spoke there, addressing Dakṣa and the gods so that all present truly heard it.

अरे अरे दुराचारी और दम्भवृत्तिमें तत्पर दक्ष! हे महामूढ़! यह कैसा अनर्थकारी कर्म तुमने कर डाला?

Ho, ho, wicked Dakṣa, given over to hypocrisy! What is this senseless, ruinous deed you have done, O utter fool?

हे मूढ़! शिवभक्तराज दधीचिके उस वचनको तुमने प्रमाण न माना, जो तुम्हारे लिये सर्वथा आनन्ददायक और मंगलकारी था।

You did not honor the word of Dadhīci, lord among Śiva's devotees, even though it was wholly auspicious and would have brought you nothing but joy, O fool.

वह ब्राह्मण तुम्हें दुस्सह शाप देकर यज्ञसे चले गये, फिर भी हे मूढ़! तुम्हारे मनमें कुछ भी नहीं समझमें आया।

That brahmin left your sacrifice after pronouncing an unbearable curse upon you — yet even after that, nothing entered the mind of you, the fool.

After that, why did you show no special honor, in your own house, to your own daughter Satī, so auspicious, who had come there of her own accord?

हे ज्ञानदुर्बल! सती और महादेवजी दोनोंकी पूजा तुमने क्यों नहीं की? 'मैं ब्रह्माका पुत्र हूँ' — ऐसा मानकर तुम मोहमें पड़कर व्यर्थ ही घमंडमें भरे हुए हो।

O you weak in wisdom, why did you fail to honor Satī and Bhava together? Deluded, you have grown vainly proud, thinking, 'I am the son of Brahmā.'

वही सती सदा आराधनाके योग्य हैं, समस्त पुण्योंका फल देनेवाली, तीनों लोकोंकी माता, कल्याणस्वरूपा और शंकरके आधे अंगमें निवास करनेवाली हैं।

That very Satī is ever worthy of worship, granting the fruit of every merit — the mother of the three worlds, all-auspicious, sharing half of Śaṅkara's own body.

That very Satī, worshipped always, grants every good fortune — Māheśvarī, who bestows on her own devotees every kind of blessing.

That very Satī, worshipped always, destroys the world's fear — the goddess who grants the heart's desire and removes every calamity.

That very Satī, worshipped always, bestows fame and prosperity — the supreme sovereign goddess who grants both enjoyment and liberation.

वही सती जगत्को धारण करनेवाली और जगत्की रक्षा करनेवाली हैं; वे अनादि शक्ति कल्पके अन्तमें जगत्का संहार करनेवाली हैं।

That very Satī is the nurse of the world, the protector of the world — the beginningless power who, at the end of the aeon, brings the world to its dissolution.

That very Satī is the mother of the world, mother of Viṣṇu, the playful one — remembered as the mother of Brahmā, Indra, the moon, fire, the sun, and the other gods.

That very Satī grants the fruit of austerity, righteous duty, charity, and the rest — Śambhu's own power, the great goddess, the destroyer of the wicked, higher than the highest.

Such is the goddess Satī, ever the beloved wife of him to whom, evil-minded fool, you gave no share of the sacrifice.

भगवान् शम्भु ही परमेश्वर, सबके स्वामी, परात्पर हैं; विष्णु, ब्रह्मा आदिके द्वारा सम्यक् सेव्य और सबका कल्याण करनेवाले हैं।

For Śambhu alone is the supreme lord, master of all, higher than the highest, rightly served by Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and the rest, the bringer of every blessing.

इन्हींके दर्शनकी इच्छासे सिद्ध पुरुष तपस्या करते हैं और इन्हींके दर्शनकी इच्छासे योगीजन योगसाधनामें प्रवृत्त होते हैं।

For his sight alone, siddhas practice austerity, longing to behold him; for his sight alone, yogis engage in yogic disciplines, longing to behold him.

The sight of Śaṅkara alone is declared to be the greatest fruit — greater than endless wealth and grain, than sacrifices and the rest.

Śiva alone is the nurse of the world, lord and master of all learning, the supreme master of the primal wisdom, the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious.

Because you, wretch, did not today pay due honor to his power, for that very reason this sacrifice of yours shall surely be destroyed.

पूजनीय व्यक्तियोंकी पूजा न करनेसे अमंगल होता ही है। क्या वे परम पूजनीया शिवा तुम्हारी पूजाके योग्य नहीं थीं?

Misfortune indeed comes from failing to honor those worthy of honor — and was she not worshipped, she who is the most worshipworthy of all, that Śivā?

Thus ends the thirty-first chapter, called "The Voice from the Sky," in the tale of Satī, in the Satī-khaṇḍa of the second Rudra-saṃhitā, in the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa.
