Chapter One · The Sages' Question · Verses 1–38

Sages keeping a great sacrificial session at Prayāga welcome Sūta and, after long praise, put one question to him: given how the people of the Kali age fall away — every class, women, children — what easy means is there to destroy their sin, here and in the world beyond?

Auspicious at beginning and end, born with no equal, noble, ageless and deathless, the god of the Self, five-faced, whose delight is the strong five-fold play — Śaṅkara, the lord of Ambikā, I hold in my mind.

NoteThe opening dhyāna verse of the Saṃhitā, in vasantatilakā metre — a homage to Śaṅkara before the narrative begins.

And the children are without devotion to mother and father, evil at heart, forever studying what is not knowledge, their bodies gripped by disease.

For these whose understanding is destroyed, given to abandoning their own duty — how, Sūta, is there to be a [good] course, here or in the world beyond?

With this our mind is forever troubled by worry; there is surely no other dharma equal to helping others.

By what easy means the immediate destruction of their sin may come about — since you know all the settled conclusions, tell it now, kindly.

Hearing these words of those sages of purified selves, Sūta, calling Śaṅkara to mind, spoke to those sages.
