Chapter One·The Sages at Prayāga Ask Sūta for a Means That Quickly Destroys Sin·Verses 1–38
अथ प्रथमोऽध्यायः
The chapter opens with a prayer to Śaṅkara, the five-faced lord of Ambikā. At Prayāga, where the Gaṅgā meets the Yamunā, sages hold a great sacrifice. Sūta, the pupil of Vyāsa, comes to meet them, and they honour and praise him as a store of every story. They have one thing left to ask. In the harsh Kali age people will fall from their duties: brāhmaṇas will sell the Veda, kṣatriyas will run from battle, vaiśyas will cheat with their scales, some śūdras will take up the conduct of brāhmaṇas, women will disrespect their husbands, and children will have no devotion for their parents. The sages ask how such people can reach a good end in this world and the next, and what easy means can destroy their sins at once. Sūta remembers Śaṅkara and begins to answer.अध्याय अम्बिकापति, पाँच मुखवाले शंकरकी स्तुतिसे आरम्भ होता है। प्रयागमें, जहाँ गंगा और यमुनाका संगम है, मुनि एक महान् यज्ञ करते हैं। व्यासजीके शिष्य सूतजी उनसे मिलने आते हैं, और मुनि उनका सत्कार करके उन्हें सब कथाओंका भण्डार कहकर उनकी स्तुति करते हैं। उन्हें एक ही बात पूछनी है। घोर कलियुगमें लोग अपने धर्मसे गिर जायँगे: ब्राह्मण वेद बेचेंगे, क्षत्रिय युद्धसे भागेंगे, वैश्य तराजूमें बेईमानी करेंगे, कुछ शूद्र ब्राह्मणोंका आचार अपनायेंगे, स्त्रियाँ पतिका अपमान करेंगी और सन्तानें माता-पिताके प्रति भक्तिहीन होंगी। मुनि पूछते हैं कि ऐसे लोगोंकी इस लोक और परलोकमें उत्तम गति कैसे हो, और कौन-सा छोटा उपाय उनके पापोंका तत्काल नाश कर सकता है। सूतजी शंकरका स्मरण करके उत्तर देना आरम्भ करते हैं।

वे आदि और अन्तमें मंगलमय हैं। उनकी कोई समानता नहीं। वे सर्वश्रेष्ठ, अजर-अमर ईश्वर हैं, आत्माको प्रकाशित करनेवाले देव हैं। उनके पाँच मुख हैं, और वे खेल-खेलमें पाँच प्रबल कर्म करते हैं: रचना, पालन, संहार, तिरोभाव और अनुग्रह। उन अम्बिकापति शंकरका मैं मनमें चिन्तन करता हूँ।
He is auspicious at the beginning and the end. He has no equal. He is the noblest, the Lord who never ages and never dies, the god who lights up the Self. He has five faces, and as play he does five mighty works: making, keeping, ending, hiding and blessing. In my mind I think of that Śaṅkara, the lord of Ambikā.

वहाँ यज्ञका समाचार सुनकर सूतजी मुनियोंसे मिलने आये। वे महामुनि, व्यासजीके शिष्य और पुराण कहनेवालोंमें श्रेष्ठ थे।
Hearing of the sacrifice there, Sūta came to meet the sages. He was the great sage, the pupil of Vyāsa, the best teller of the Purāṇas.

अपनेको श्रेष्ठ कुलवाला मानकर वे चारों वर्णोंसे उलटा बरताव करेंगे। वे सब वर्णोंको भ्रष्ट करेंगे। वे मूढ़ होंगे, फिर भी अनुचित ढंगसे सत्कर्म करेंगे।
