Chapter Three · Chanchulā Turns Away · Verses 1–57

The story of Chanchulā — a brahmin's wife who fell into a wrong life, then, hearing the Śiva Purāṇa at a shrine, broke down in fear and begged the reciter to lift her out.

Even by performing a hundred horse-sacrifices, or bathing in the Ganges for a hundred years, there seems to be no cleansing of my heavy sin.

You alone are my teacher, brahmin; you are my mother and my father too. Lift me up, lift me up — a poor woman who has come to you alone for shelter.

As she fell at his feet, dispassion now born in her, the wise brahmin raised her up kindly and spoke.
