Defeated in battle by Śiva's gaṇas, the gods flee, and Bṛhaspati tells Indra that Rudra cannot be overcome. Vīrabhadra mockingly offers the fleeing gods their sacrificial portions before routing them outright, and when the terrified sages beg Viṣṇu to defend the sacrifice, Viṣṇu and Vīrabhadra face off — trading challenge for challenge until each recognizes the other as one with Śiva, and both arm themselves for the battle to come.
