Nārada asks what became of Himācala and Menā after the gods' departure. Brahmā tells how the couple performed austerities for twenty-seven years, until the Goddess, pleased, appears before Menā as Kālikā and offers a boon. Menā, guided in prayer, offers an extended hymn naming the Goddess as the power behind every element and force; the Goddess grants that a hundred mighty sons will be born to her first, and thereafter a daughter — the Goddess herself, born to become Rudra's wife and accomplish the gods' work. In time Menā bears her first son, the mountain Maināka, who befriends the ocean and alone escapes Indra's wing-clipping of the mountains, before Himācala and Menā's household celebrates.
