This chapter gives the Gāyatrī as a vidyā in her own right, with her placing on the body and meditation-form, together with the mantra of Agni as Jātavedas and the fierce forms of Durgā associated with it, and rules for the right timing of worship by star and lunar day.

Now I shall speak of the Gāyatrī — she who embodies the twenty-four essential principles (tattvas) and is herself the very form of the threefold Veda — through whom Brahman, whose nature is being, consciousness and bliss, is made manifest.

One should meditate on this form of Durga: her radiance like a flash of lightning, seated fearsomely on the shoulder of a lion, surrounded by maiden attendants whose own hands gleam with sword and shield. In her many hands she bears a discus, a conch, a sword, a shield, and an arrow, as well as a bow together with its string, and shows the threatening gesture of the forefinger. She is of the very nature of fire, wears the crescent moon, and has three eyes.

By this method, the [Āgneya] mantra becomes perfected once it has been purified through the reversed recitation just described. Its eight constituent quarters are now told: the first quarter — the portion beginning with the word 'Agni' — has five syllables and should be known as embodying the five organs of knowledge, namely smell, taste, sight, hearing, and touch, one to each syllable in order.

Milk should be sevenfold the measure of ghee, and curd threefold the measure of the cow's urine; ghee should equal the cow's urine — or, alternatively, all five may simply be taken in equal measure.

The cows providing these should be, in turn, of tawny, white, black, smoke-grey, and red hues; in their absence, all five are declared to come, in every case, from a single tawny (kapila) cow.

On a board of forty-nine compartments made of palāśa wood, leaving aside the four corner compartments, one writes the Jātavedas mantra preceded by the śakti-bīja. Having written it starting from the middle compartment, one should worship the deity there. Having performed the fire-offering together with its libation-residue, one should bury it as described before, and give the bali as before — the result already stated applies to this rite as well.

In the middle is written the Māyā-bīja; in the eight surrounding compartments are placed the eight parts of the Agni-mantra, the whole encircled by the mātṛkā letters and set within an earthen enclosure. This yantra, destroyer of the diseases of all beings, bestows protection, long life, glory, and fame.

Now the two workings of the Āgneyāstra, the fire-weapon mantra — its release and its taking-up again — are to be known. The man who has been instructed in these by a guru: the three worlds become subject to him.
