Chapter Eight · Tripurā and the Hymn to the Goddess of Speech · Verses 1–77

The eighth paṭala turns to a second deity-specific mantra-sādhana, opening with Tripurā — an exalted, "threefold" form of the Goddess, her name explained through her priority to the three creator-gods, her identity with the three Vedas, and her pervasion of the three worlds at dissolution. Her mantra is built from three bīja-groups, named here by the same discreet epithets the Śrīvidyā tradition itself uses rather than spelled out openly — one said to grant excellence in eloquence, one to agitate and draw the three worlds, one to remove poison and grant poetic skill. The practitioner installs these letters across the body in careful sequence, then meditates on a striking image of the goddess: red as ten thousand suns, three-eyed, crowned with a sliver of the moon, garlanded with a string of blood-dripping heads. External worship follows around a "nine-yoni" diagram, a lattice of interlocking triangles watched over by nine named power-goddesses, the row of the lineage's gurus, and the eight classical Bhairavas, each honoured with fragrance, lamps, and food. A long central section then catalogues, in the text's usual plain and technical register, what specific offerings and recitation-counts accomplish — poetic gift, royal and public favour, protection from calamity, freedom from untimely death, the drawing of fortune, and outright vaśīkaraṇa, the subjugation of another's will, translated here without euphemism or apology as elsewhere in this text. A run of visualization verses ties these same bīja-syllables to the body's subtle centres — the base, the heart, the crown — each meditation bound to its own fruit, before the Tripurā material closes with a summary and a promise of eloquence, prosperity, and renown to its faithful reciter. From verse 44 the paṭala pivots to an entirely separate, ten-syllabled mantra for Sarasvatī under her epithet Bhāratī, walking through its own seer, its own limb-installation, a gentler dhyāna of the goddess seated on a lotus with pen and manuscript in hand, its own catalogue of fire-offerings for poetic accomplishment, and a further roster of attendant śaktis echoing the letter-goddesses first named back in paṭala 7. The chapter closes with the "Vāgīśvara-stuti," a fourteen-verse hymn of praise addressed directly to the Goddess of Speech — hailing her by turns as Durgā, as Kamalā, and as Tripurā herself, dwelling on her purity, her Vedic and grammatical completeness, and the freedom from fault promised to whoever holds devotion to her, before a closing verse promises the eternal, undying state to anyone who recites this very hymn.

Now I shall declare a distinguished knowledge (vidyā), exceedingly rare, called Tripurā. Though itself a distinct unfolding of the Creatrix, it has taken thirty forms in this world, and is honored by all the gods.

Because she existed prior to the creation of the three deities (Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva), because she is by nature the three Vedas even from the beginning, and because at the dissolution of the universe she fills even the three worlds — for these reasons the Mother's name is, for the most part, 'Tripurā.'

One bīja arises from the code-syllables for sky, moon, fire, and the dot beneath; a second from the codes for the red one, the clear one, ka, Indra, and the flame-crested, joined with the codes Sara and Mā and the half-moon mark; and a third from the codes for the sky, the cool-rayed moon, and fire, closing without the final vowel. From these three seed-syllables the knowledge called Tripurā arises.

I bow to the goddess who has the hue of ten thousand copper-red suns, whose matted hair is adorned with a digit of the moon, who is three-eyed, whose face is like the full moon, who holds a rosary and a book and whose hands make the gestures of fearlessness and boon-giving, whose full, high breasts are heavy upon her, whose waist is graceful with its folds, whose body is adorned with a garland of heads dripping blood, and who is clothed and anointed in deep red.

One of pure radiance, simply dressed, in an earthen dwelling, who recites the 'Vāgbhava' bīja one lakh (100,000) times — or a tenth of that together with the prescribed fire-offering rite and collyrium and the like charged by mantra — such a reciter fills the entire threefold world with poetic compositions of manifold meaning, and is ceaselessly served through the night by beautiful women stricken and bewildered by love.

O you of the nature of awakening for the wise, engaged in the beautiful dance upon the stage of the lotus-heart of the learned; O Blessed One, bestower of auspicious ends — grant the devotion that breaks the bonds of worldly existence; be gracious to me.
