Chapter Eighteen·The Mantra of Sadāśiva·Verses 1–130
This chapter turns from Viṣṇu to Śiva, giving the mantra and five-faced meditation-form of Sadāśiva, together with the hand-gestures, fire-offerings and the consecration-yantra used in his worship.

Now I shall declare the mantras of the great Lord Śiva, which grant the accomplishment of every aim — mantras by which the sages of old attained imperishable union with Śiva.

By this code: hṛdayam stands for the syllable namaḥ; vaparam for the letter śa; sākṣi marks it joined with i, giving śi; lāntaḥ for the letter va; anantānvitaḥ joins it with ā, giving vā; and marut for the letter ya. Thus is declared the five-syllabled mantra [namaḥ śivāya]; and this, prefixed with the praṇava [oṃ], becomes the six-syllabled [oṃ namaḥ śivāya].

The six-syllabled mantra, enclosed with the Śakti-syllable, is called the eight-syllabled mantra. Its sage and metre are said to be as before, and its presiding deity is Umāpati, the Lord of Umā. Its limb-assignments are as previously described; one should meditate on Someśa — Śiva united with Umā.

In the centre, together with the syllables of the subject's name, one should inscribe the fixed syllable [oṃ]; on the petals of the four directions, the mantra's middle syllable; and on the corner petals, its final syllable. Then, around that earthen enclosure, in the cardinal and intermediate directions, place the moon together with the ṭa-ending syllable. This is declared to be the yantra that removes every fear and pacifies poison, evil spirits, untimely death, disease, delusion, and sorrow — proclaimed to bestow fortune and fame.
