This āhnika lays out the outer rite in its full order, and at every step reads the rite as the inner truth taught so far. The place of worship is wherever the heart is glad, for nothing else makes it fit for absorption in the Lord; sacred seats and mountain-tops are only named because they help this gladness. Before the shrine one performs the general nyāsa on hands and body with the two mantras of Mālinī and the alphabet — Śakti first, then the Lord — and the whole meaning of the Mother Mālinī is unfolded: garlanded with the powers of Rudra, flowering in results, humming the sound that ends the winter of transmigration, holding both attainment and freedom, so that even a broken or worldly mantra becomes complete through her. The same nyāsa on the vessel of offering shows the purpose of the whole procedure: every factor of the act — place, vessel, worshipper, deity — is made into the Supreme Lord, so that one who simply performs the rite with this eye becomes the Lord without any other knowledge or yoga. Then the entry into the shrine, and a long meditation on the directions: the middle is the light of consciousness itself, above is what light takes as its own, below what it does not, east what faces the light, and so the four quarters with Bhairava's faces in them — the directions are not a separate reality but the glory of consciousness giving itself a form, and the sun that divides the quarters is nothing but the Lord's power of knowledge; self, sun and Lord are held as one. Sitting facing north one burns the sense of "I" in body and subtle body, rises into the waveless abode and lays the six-fold nyāsa on the first pulse of vibration that is the Lord's form, with the Śaktis as the chief objects of worship. The trident-lotus is then set in body, breath and mind, from the root support through the staff of the tattvas up to the lotus of pure knowledge where Sadāśiva lies as the great corpse, and above his three head-openings the trident of Śakti, Vyāpinī and Samanā ending at the twelve-finger point; to place the deity on this world-seat, to offer all things into it, is worship; to become it is meditation; to rock in that inner awareness is repetition; to make the universe one's own by the blaze of that awareness is oblation. Two verses fix this: remembering the trident from root to the twelve-finger point one goes to the state of the sky-goer, whose nature is to fill the sky by moving and resting there and by drinking its nectar. Inner worship alone truly finishes the work, yet the outer rite is also to be done, to cut away limitation and, for one who has not yet reached absorption, to win it by practice. Then the preparatory rite: taking the ground, worshipping Gaṇeśa, the jar and the vessel, the altar and the fire; the disciple's preparation is like the sharpening of the teeth, the deity's a turning toward the work, the teacher's a taking of it up. The ground is taken by scattering mustard, grain and parched rice charged with the weapon mantra and gathering them toward the north-east; the jar is filled with the drink of bliss and charged a hundred and eight times; the disciple carries the weapon-vessel around the house while the teacher follows with the jar reciting a verse to Indra and the guardians. The fire is kindled and made one with the fire of awareness in the heart, the mantras are fed with butter and sesame, and the full oblation is poured standing with the ladles turned as Śakti and Śiva while the stream of nectar from the full moon of Śiva risen in the sky of the twelve-finger point is imagined; the caru is shared out, the tooth-stick thrown, and the blindfolded disciple is brought in and casts a handful of flowers — when the blindfold is removed he sees the mantra present in that place and becomes one with it. The teacher's right hand, made of the circle of deities, burns the disciple's bonds at head, heart and navel; the left, of the moon, feeds him with the pure element; the disciple sleeps beside the teacher and a bad dream is not explained to him but only remedied with the weapon mantra. Next day the teacher enters the disciple by the path of his breath, touches the six causes at heart, throat, palate, brow, aperture and twelve-finger point, imagines eight refinements at each, and after forty-eight refinements the disciple has attained the state of Rudra and is a samayin. The rules are then stated: devotion to teacher, scripture and deity, turning away from their opposites, reverence for the teacher's family and fellow-initiates, not speaking the names of deity, teacher and mantra outside worship, no games before the teacher, no fellowship with those of lower ways, no thought of birth-rank in the circle, no shrine or ford held higher than the body, and constant remembrance of the heart of the mantra. Having heard and accepted this the disciple satisfies the teacher with a gift up to wealth, wife and body itself, and the earlier initiates and the poor; he is now entitled to practise the mantra, to daily worship, to hearing and study, and in every occasional rite he must ask the teacher. The closing verse: having surveyed the whole course and seen the self full, the disciple should see it by the teacher's grace as reaching to the twelve-finger point — so is the child a samayin.
