The sixth āhnika opens the "outer method" and takes up the first of its three seats, the breath. The whole path that the book will describe is measured out in the breath, and time is nothing but the counting of that path in sequence and non-sequence; this counting shines within the Lord as his power Kālī, and when it appears with division it is the movement of breath. Consciousness itself, taking a form apart from its objects, becomes the void and then, eager to seize the objects, falls into the body as the breath-power that makes it seem alive. In the breath, whose one rise and fall spans thirty-six finger-breadths from the heart to the "end of twelve", every unit of time is laid out: the ghaṭikā, the lunar day with its day and night, the month with its dark and bright halves, the two junctures and the two "eclipses" where the māyā-knower swallows the nectar of the object-moon, the year with its twelve zodiac-passages, and then twelve years, sixty years, the ages, the days of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Rudra, the hundred Rudras, Śrīkaṇṭha, Gahaneśa, the day of māyā, of Īśvara, of Sadāśiva and of the Unsupported, ending in the still Brahman from which the whole wheel of time turns like the opening and closing of an eye. All these countless creations and dissolutions rest in one breath, that breath in consciousness, and this is the mere pulse of pure consciousness — which is why the strangeness of time in dreams is no contradiction. The same rise of time is traced in the in-breath, the equalising breath with its inner "zodiac passages", the up-breath and the pervading breath, and then in the letters and in mantra, whose repetition, like a water-wheel, unites the reciter with the mantra-deity. When the movement of breath grows subtle and time is devoured, one complete awareness shines; for time alone divides knowing, and one breath holds one act of knowing. Seeing the whole course of time as the rise of breath and recognising his own lordship, one is freed.

That same method is what was called "the fixing of a seat". The seat is threefold: the breath, the body and the outside. First, the method in the breath. The whole path that is going to be described is counted out as resting in the breath; the counting of it in sequence and non-sequence is time. That time shines within the Supreme Lord, and that shining is the God's power called Kālī; but its appearing with division, in sequence and non-sequence, is the movement of breath. For it is consciousness itself that takes a form set apart from its objects; and so, through being bounded, becoming knowable, it is the void. Then, by its freedom, falling upon the object in eagerness to take it, it becomes chiefly power of action, in the form of breathing — the nature of the living being; and since it fills the body in five forms, the body seems conscious.

In the power of action, the course of time is the earlier part and the course of space — the variety of forms — the later part. The courses of letters, mantras and words have their place in the course of time, because they are its supreme, subtle and gross forms. The place of the course of space, as levels, worlds and kalās, will come in its own turn. Now, although the breath is woven through the whole body, outside and inside, still its effort is clearly felt from the heart onward, so it is to be described from there.

Three things cause the breath to move — the Lord's power, the self's power and effort — some as secondary, some as chief. From the heart to the end of twelve, measured in each one's own finger-breadths, the course of the breath is thirty-six fingers, both going out and coming in, since each has a body, strength and effort fitted to itself. In it the ghaṭikā, the lunar day, the month, the year and the groups of years — the whole of time — are completed. On the rule that a finger and a fifth is one caṣaka, the ghaṭikā arises: a ghaṭikā is sixty caṣakas, so it comes to seventy-two fingers.

In the dark fortnight the apāna-moon gives up one nourishing digit after another into the prāṇa-sun, until at the fifteenth tuṭi, near the end of twelve, the moon — its spread of separate digits gone — dissolves into the prāṇa-sun. The half-tuṭi after that is the juncture of the fortnights. The first half of that half-tuṭi is the new-moon part, the second the first-day part. When, through a cutting of the lunar day caused by a cough, exertion, attention or the like, the new-moon part enters the first-day part, there is an eclipse; there the Rāhu who is the māyā-knower, born together with the object-moon, unable by nature to dissolve it and able only to cover it, drinks the moon's nectar that has gone into the sun. Because it makes knower, knowing and known undivided, that holy time gives fruit for the other world. Then, as the breath enters, the sun of consciousness fills the apāna-moon digit by digit until the fifteenth tuṭi, the full moon; after that come the juncture and the eclipse as before — but this gives fruit for this world.
Now the rise of the year. The dark fortnight itself is the northern course, with a passage of the sun every six fingers, from Capricorn to the end of Gemini. There each finger has five lunar days, with the division into day and night there too. Likewise the in-breath is the southern course: being in the womb, the wish to come forth, the urge to come forth, being about to come forth, the start of coming forth, coming forth, and the six changes beginning with birth — in order, in Capricorn and the rest. So too worship here brings its fitting fruit. And here the Rudras from Dakṣa to Pitāmaha, with their powers, are the twelve lords. This is the rise of the year.

By the rule of sixty lunar days to a finger and a year to each passage of the sun, twelve years arise in one in-breath and out-breath. With three hundred lunar days to a finger and a year to a finger and a fifth — where earlier a caṣaka was said to be — there are five years to a passage, and so, by this order, sixty years arise in one going-out and coming-in of the breath; here the count of lunar days is twenty-one thousand six hundred. That is exactly the number of breaths in a day and night, so nothing beyond the rise of sixty years is examined, because it goes on without end. A human year is a lunar day of the gods; by this order twelve thousand divine years are the four ages.

Four, three, two, one — such are the ages from the Kṛta onward, and with as many hundreds come the eight twilights. Seventy-one four-age cycles make a manvantara; fourteen manvantaras make a day of Brahmā. At the end of Brahmā's day, when the three worlds are burnt by the fire of time and the other three worlds are put to sleep by the smoke, all beings, driven by the rushing fire, remain in Janaloka as souls of the dissolution. But the awakened ones — Kūṣmāṇḍa, Hāṭakeśa and the rest — play in Maharloka. Then, when the night ends, comes Brahmā's creation. By this measure a hundred years is Brahmā's life. That is a day of Viṣṇu, and his night is as long; his life too is a hundred.

That is a day of Rudra, lord of the Rudra-world above it; the night is as long, the year as before, and a hundred of them is the limit. When that ends, Rudra goes to the state of Śiva — that is the stated limit of Rudra's office. That is a day of the hundred Rudras who hold the egg of Brahmā; the night is as long, and their life too is a hundred. When the hundred Rudras end, the egg of Brahmā perishes. So from the level of water up to the unmanifest this same order gives the Rudras' lives: the life of the lower is a day of the next. Then Brahmā and the Rudras in charge of water and the rest remain in the unmanifest, and Śrīkaṇṭhanātha is then the destroyer. This is the intermediate dissolution; when it ends comes creation, in which even those freed by other scriptures are created again.

Śrīkaṇṭhanātha's own life is a day of the Rudras who dwell in the sheaths, and their night is as long. Their life is a day of Gahaneśa, his night just as long, and in it everything dissolves into māyā. Then Gahaneśa creates again. The time of the unmanifest so reckoned, multiplied by ten parārdhas, gives a day of māyā; the night is as long — that is the dissolution. The time of māyā multiplied by a hundred parārdhas is a day at the level of Īśvara. Here the breath creates the world; the night, as long, is where the breath comes to rest — and even when the breath is stilled in the seat of the brahma-cleft, in the consciousness that remains there is still sequence. The number got by multiplying Īśvara's time by a hundred parārdhas is a day of Sadāśiva; the night is as long — that is the great dissolution.

Sadāśiva, when his own time runs out, passes through bindu, ardhacandra and nirodhikā and dissolves into nāda; nāda into the level of Śakti, that into Vyāpinī, and she into the Unsupported. Śakti's time multiplied by a crore of parārdhas is a day of the Unsupported. The Unsupported rests in the state of "with mind", and that state, which is evenness, is Brahman. From this evenness, an uncountable time, the turning of the whole wheel of the spreading and dissolving of time just described arises as the mere closing and opening of an eye. One, ten, hundred, thousand, ayuta, lakh, niyuta, crore, arbuda, vṛnda, kharva, nikharva, padma, śaṅku, samudra, antya, madhya, parārdha — eighteen, each ten times the last: this is the rule of counting.

So countless creations and dissolutions rest in one breath, which is the great creation; that breath in consciousness, that in the limiting condition, that in pure consciousness. This is the pulse of pure consciousness itself — what is called the rise of time. That is why the strangeness of time in dream, imagination and the like brings no contradiction. As time rises in the out-breath, so it does in the in-breath too, from the heart to the root seat. And as in the heart, throat, palate, forehead, aperture and end of twelve there are the six causes called Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Rudra, Īśa, Sadāśiva and the Unsupported, so in the in-breath too, in the heart, bulb, bliss, contraction, expansion and end of twelve, these are the lords of childhood, youth, old age, death, rebirth and liberation.

Now the rise of time in the equalising breath. Samāna, moving through the ten channels of the heart, carries the juices and the rest evenly through the whole body. Moving in the eight directions, it makes the knower imitate, as it were, the doings of that direction's lord; moving up and down, it goes and returns in three channels. On the outer equinox day, at dawn, it flows in the middle path for a ghaṭikā and a quarter. Then, counting nine hundred breaths each, come outwardly two and a half ghaṭikās — left, right, left, right, left — five passages. Then, the five passages done, when thirteen and three-quarter ghaṭikās have passed, comes the southern, autumn equinox at midday: nine hundred breaths. Then again right, left, right, left, right — five passages of nine hundred each; and so in the night too.

So on the equinox day and its night there are twelve passages each. Then, as the days lengthen and shorten, the passages increase and decrease. So in one samāna breath there are two years, since there is no pairing of in-breath and out-breath. Here too the rise of twelve years and the rest is as before. In the up-breath the course of time, which is mere pulsation, reaches to the end of twelve; here too the method is as before. In the pervading breath, which is all-pervading and so without sequence, time still rises through a subtle surging.

Now the rise of the letters. At the equinox a class of letters rises evenly every half-watch; each letter has two hundred and sixteen breaths, and outwardly its rise is thirty-six caṣakas. This is the effortless rise of the letters. But the rise of mantra comes from effort: like the turning of a water-wheel with its pots, by the force of a single sustained attention, keeping up the varied rise of mantra day and night, one becomes one with the mantra-deity.

For the ever-rising mantra the count of its rising is explained by the count of breaths: when that is doubled, half of it, and so on, so that in the wheel of a hundred and eight there are two hundred risings. For one who has come to rest, step by step, in the gross and then subtle nature of the movement, when the movement of breath has faded and time has been devoured, this one complete awareness shines, full of manifold power.

It is difference of time alone that divides awareness, not difference of object — as with the knowledge of one standing on a peak. The time a cognition lasts is a moment, and in one rise of breath there is one cognition. This must be so; otherwise no thought-cognition could be one at all, since it is coloured by words that come in sequence, and even a single mora is sequential — as it is said, "of it the first half-short is high-pitched". So as long as another pulse has not arisen, there is one cognition.

That is why, when the eighty-one words are recalled, that single thought whose object is the Supreme Lord — by way of entering into their various attributes — becomes thought-free through the devouring of time. So, seeing the whole course of time in the rise of breath, counting the countless varied creations and dissolutions right there, and recognising the supreme lordship as his own, one is freed.
