Chapter Five · The Way of the Individual · Verses 10.1–17.2

When thought cannot purify itself without help, it leans on limited supports — intellect, breath, body, and outer things like a pot — and so becomes "atomic", giving rise to the knowledge of the individual. The intellect works through meditation; the breath through utterance, gross (the five breaths) and subtle (the phoneme); the body through the postures called karaṇa; outer things through worship of the jar, the altar and the liṅga. Meditation is taught first: meditate in your own heart on the self-luminous reality that holds every level, and there on the fusion of knower, knowing and known — fire, sun and moon — until it blazes as the fire of the Great Bhairava, fanned by the wind of meditation. See it, ringed by its twelve powers as flames, go out through the eye or another opening, rest on an outer object, and there fill that object as the moon in emission, light it as the sun in maintenance, melt it as the fire in withdrawal, and bring it to the state of the Unsurpassed. When the wheel has thus absorbed everything outer, and every latent trace too, the meditator who sees that emission, maintenance and withdrawal are nothing but his own awareness, and that their freedom is his own, becomes Bhairava at once; with practice, every wished-for power follows. Then utterance: one who would raise the breath rests first in the void of the heart, then in the outgoing breath, then in the incoming breath that fills everything like the moon, then in the equal breath where the two fuse, then in the rising breath that burns up knower and known, and finally in the pervading breath where awareness flashes free of every limit. These six restings are the six blisses — own-bliss, no-bliss, supreme bliss, Brahman-bliss, great bliss, consciousness-bliss — and the one who holds them all together is world-bliss. In each resting five states arise as one enters more deeply: bliss, rising, trembling, sleep and whirling — the states from waking to beyond-the-fourth — and they occur as one enters the triangle, the bulb, the heart, the palate and the upper kuṇḍalinī. The supreme vibration, the dawning object and the dawned object are the three liṅgas, the highest being the heart of the yoginī. Then the phoneme: the inarticulate hum that sounds in this very utterance, whose chief forms are the seeds of emission and withdrawal; any sound from ka to ma, with or without a vowel, uttered inwardly or merely remembered, touches the vibration of awareness in full, since it depends on no convention; one should make heart, throat and lips one, and the two twelve-finger ends one with the heart. The karaṇa is left for the chapter on mudrā. The closing verse: when thought cannot reach fullness by itself it is purified by a means, and the means here is manifold — intellect, breath, body and the outer — but in their highest fruit they do not differ at all; and the vernacular verse: void, sun, moon and fire — this is the vigorous rising of breath; the hero who stays in it soon reaches the supreme state.

When thought is able by itself to purify itself, without depending on any other means, then it falls away from the working of the bound creature, becomes by the grace of pure knowledge the power of the Supreme Lord, and, relied on as the means, brings forth the knowledge of Śakti. This was settled in the āhnika just before. But when thought needs another means for its own purification, it takes as means limited things such as intellect, breath, body and pot, becomes atomic, and brings forth the knowledge of the individual. Of these, the intellect works as meditation. The breath is gross and subtle: the first works as utterance, and utterance means the five movements beginning with the outgoing breath; the subtle, called the phoneme, will be described. The body, as particular postures, is called karaṇa. Outer things such as the pot will be described as the means of worshipping the jar, the altar, the liṅga and so on.

Of these, we shall first teach the meditation fitting here. Meditate in the awareness of your own heart on the self-luminous highest reality already described, which holds every level within it. There meditate on the fusion of the triad fire, sun and moon — knower, knowing and known — until it becomes the fire of the Great Bhairava, blazing as if fanned by the wind of meditation. That fire is a wheel ringed by the twelve powers mentioned before as its flames. Think of it as going out through one of the openings, the eye or another, and resting on an outer object. And by it, so resting, meditate on that outer thing as first filled as the moon, in the order of emission; then lit as the sun, in maintenance; then melted as the fire of withdrawal; then brought to the state of the Unsurpassed.

Thus that wheel becomes full, one with every outer thing. Then one should meditate on the things that remain only as latent traces as treated in the same way by that wheel. For one who meditates thus without pause, who is certain that the series of emission, maintenance and withdrawal are in truth nothing but his own awareness, and that the truth of his own awareness is the freedom to emit and the rest, there is at once the state of Bhairava. And with practice, every wished-for power and the rest come as well.

One should meditate on that all-pervading lord of the wheel, whose rays are the twelve great powers, as going out through the openings and bringing about emission and the rest outside.

Resting in the self, the yogin should contemplate the whole circle of outer and inner things as swallowed by it. Thus the unfolding of one's own self will come about.

These are the summary verses. So much for meditation. Here, one who wishes to raise the breath first rests in the void, in the heart itself; then outside, as the outgoing breath rises; then, toward the outside again, he sees himself as all through the filling by the moon of the incoming breath; then he wants nothing else; then, as the equal breath rises, he experiences rest in their fusion; then, as the fire of the rising breath comes up, he swallows the reckoning of knower, known and the rest. When that swallowing fire subsides and the pervading breath rises, he flashes forth free of every limit.

These restings, from the void to the pervading breath, are the six levels of bliss that have been taught: own-bliss, no-bliss, supreme bliss, Brahman-bliss, great bliss and consciousness-bliss. The one who holds them all together, without rising or setting, whose truth is inner rest, is world-bliss. So, resting in these levels of utterance — in each one, in twos and so on, or in all together — one reaches a further reality of rest, distinct from that body, breath and the rest. Keeping in mind just this, the secret of uttering the seeds of emission and withdrawal, one should purify thought. And in each of these restings five states arise, according to the depth of entry.

There, first comes bliss, from touching a part of fullness; then rising, from settling for a moment in bodilessness; then trembling, as one is seized by one's own power and identity with the body loosens; then sleep, from the dissolving of outward-turnedness. When the sense of self in the not-self has thus dissolved, then, because one's own self is made of all, the sense of not-self dissolves in the self; hence whirling, from the rise of the great pervasion. These are the levels from waking to beyond-the-fourth. And these levels arise on entering the wheels of the triangle, the bulb, the heart, the palate and the upper kuṇḍalinī.

Thus, in the rest of utterance, the supreme vibration in which every object has melted away, that in which the object is dawning, and that in which the object has dawned — these are the three liṅgas, as we shall say in their place. And the highest liṅga here is the heart of the yoginī. There the nature of vibration is chief, because, being contraction and expansion, the paired form rises and rest is gained in the phase of emission. Enough of this; the entry here is not to be made public.

These are the inner verses. So much for utterance. The hum that sounds in this very utterance, almost an inarticulate echo, is the phoneme. Its chief form is in the seeds of emission and withdrawal, and by practising it the supreme awareness is gained. For in any sound from ka to ma, with a vowel or without, uttered inwardly or merely remembered, the touch of the vibration of awareness is equally distinct — and complete, since it depends on no convention; even words that depend on convention bring their meaning to mind, as in daydreaming and the like. By the touch of the awareness of the Unsurpassed, having made heart, throat and lips one, one should make the two twelve-finger ends and the heart one. This is the secret of the phoneme.

In the rite of the phoneme, seed or cluster, consciousness becomes full for one who enters it evenly — from the vibration of awareness, through the absence of a thing meant, and through the stopping of the movement of moon and sun.

When the thought of someone does not reach fullness by itself, it is purified by a means; and here that means is manifold — in the intellect, in the breath, in the body, and then outside. Thus it has been settled as the way of the individual. In bringing about the highest fruit there is no difference at all among these.
