Chapter One · The Kinds of Knowledge · Verses 1–5.4

The opening āhnika says why the book exists and what it will teach. After bowing to the Mother and the Father whose union is his own heart, to the vast Tantrāloka, and to his teacher Śambhunātha, Abhinavagupta explains that the Tantrāloka is too wide for everyone to enter, so here is its essence in straight words. He states the thesis: knowledge frees, because it undoes the ignorance that binds. Ignorance is of two kinds — the ignorance in the intellect, which is lack of conviction or wrong conviction, and the ignorance in the person, which is the contracted, dividing awareness that is the very root of worldly life. Initiation removes the second, but initiation itself needs a mind that already knows what to take up and what to give up; so firm knowledge in the intellect comes first, and when it is practised it destroys the deeper ignorance too. Such knowledge rests on scripture, and the only scripture that frees from every bond is the word of the Supreme Lord — of which the Trika works are the essence, and the Mālinīvijaya the essence of those. Then the prologue: the one thing worth attaining is our own nature, and that nature is light. Light is one, free, all-pervading and eternal; its freedom is bliss, will, consciousness, knowledge and action. This is Śiva. By his own freedom he shows himself as the contracted individual, and by the same freedom he reveals himself again as the unbounded light — either without any means, or through will, knowledge or action. These four ways are what the book will teach.

May my heart awaken and shine — the heart that belongs to the family of the highest, deathless reality. It is born from the union of the Mother and the Father: the Mother, who rests on pure creative power and is the great giver of ever-new creation, and the Father, complete in himself, whose light stays hidden behind five faces.

Here, knowledge is the cause of liberation, because it opposes the ignorance that causes bondage. Ignorance is of two kinds: ignorance in the intellect and ignorance in the person. Ignorance in the intellect is lack of conviction, or wrong conviction. Ignorance in the person is dividing thought — a contracted way of appearing — and that alone is the root cause of worldly life, as we shall say when we settle the nature of impurity.

Of these, the ignorance in the person may indeed be removed by initiation and the like. But even initiation is not possible while the ignorance of no-conviction remains in the intellect — because initiation, which consists in purifying the levels of reality and joining one to Śiva, must be preceded by a firm sense of what to give up and what to take up.

So the chief thing is knowledge seated in the intellect, of the nature of conviction. When that is practised it destroys the ignorance in the person as well, because the practice of awareness in thought ends in the thought-free. For the self is the light of awareness uncontracted by thought — Śiva by nature. Therefore, in every way, what is to be taken up is knowledge of right conviction, bearing on every thing.

And that knowledge rests on scripture. The only authoritative scripture is what the Supreme Lord has spoken — because it accepts the matters taught in other scriptures, each in its own place, and also sets out, established by reason, what lies beyond them. So the knowledge taught in other scriptures frees only from that much bondage, not from all; what frees from all is the scripture of the Supreme Lord, made of five streams and divided into ten, eighteen and sixty-four. The essence of all of that is the scriptures of the Trika; of those, the Mālinīvijaya; and the matter contained in it cannot be set out without being gathered together.

Scripture declares that ignorance is the cause of bondage, and calls it impurity. When even a fraction of full knowledge rises, all of it is uprooted; and when self-awareness rises with every impurity destroyed, that is liberation. Therefore, with this treatise, I make plain the whole of whatever truth there is to be known.

Now here, our own nature alone is the highest thing to attain. The nature of all things is light alone, because what is not light cannot be anything's nature. And that light is not many: no nature other than light can enter light, so there is no division in it. Nor do place and time divide it, since they too are by nature that light. So light is one. And that alone is awareness, for awareness is the shining of things — on this no one disagrees.

And that light does not depend on anything else. Dependence means being something that is lit up, and being lit up needs another light; but there is no other light. So the one light is free. By that very freedom it is unlimited by place, time or form, and so it is all-pervading, eternal, of every form and of no form. Its freedom is the power of bliss; the wonder of that is the power of will; being light is the power of consciousness; reflective grasping is the power of knowledge; taking on every form is the power of action. Though endowed with these chief powers, in truth it holds the powers of will, knowledge and action — the unbounded light resting in its own bliss, which is Śiva. That very one, showing himself by his freedom as contracted, is called the individual soul.

And once again he freely reveals himself, so that he shines as Śiva, the unbounded light. There too, by his freedom, he reveals himself either without any means or through a means; and where there is a means, it is will, or knowledge, or action. So absorption is threefold — Śāmbhava, Śākta and Āṇava. All four of these forms are taught here in order.
