The Āhnikas आह्निक

The whole of the Tantrāloka as it has come down to us — thirty-seven āhnikas ("day-lessons"), opening with the nature of the ultimate reality and the means of realising it. तन्त्रालोक का वह सम्पूर्ण भाग जो हम तक पहुँचा है — सैंतीस आह्निक, जिनका आरम्भ परम तत्त्व के स्वरूप और उसकी प्राप्ति के उपायों से होता है।

अथ प्रथममाह्निकम् The Kinds of Knowledge विज्ञानभेदः Verses 1–333

The opening āhnika lays the ground for the whole work. After the invocations to the Goddess, to his teachers and to Śambhunātha, Abhinavagupta states the thesis of every scripture: ignorance binds and knowledge alone frees. Ignorance is not a mere absence of knowing but incomplete knowing — and it is of two kinds, the innate impurity of the soul and the mistaken judgements of the intellect; initiation removes the first, while only knowledge that works through the intellect brings liberation in this very life. He then describes what is to be known: Śiva, who is pure light, free, all-pervading, eternal and of every form, one with his powers, whose freedom alone appears as the whole spread of worlds, categories and souls. Explaining the names Bhairava, Deva, Pati and Śiva, he shows that the one consciousness is the sole object of worship in every rite and that even the worship of other gods reaches only that. From this he derives the means (upāya): the immediate way without means, the Śāmbhava way of the will, the Śākta way of knowledge, and the Āṇava way of action — with knowledge as the heart of all of them, since action is nothing but knowledge grown coarse. After a reflection on how enquiry itself unfolds through statement, definition and examination as the play of the three powers of consciousness, the āhnika closes with a table of contents of all thirty-seven āhnikas and a summary of the whole teaching: the self is consciousness, bondage is the hiding of its own light, and liberation is its unveiling. पहला आह्निक पूरे ग्रन्थ की भूमिका रखता है। देवी, अपने गुरुओं और शम्भुनाथ की वन्दना के बाद अभिनवगुप्त हर शास्त्र का मूल सिद्धान्त कहते हैं: अज्ञान बाँधता है और ज्ञान ही मुक्त करता है। अज्ञान का अर्थ ज्ञान का अभाव नहीं, अधूरा ज्ञान है — और वह दो तरह का है: जीव का सहज मल और बुद्धि के गलत निश्चय; दीक्षा पहले को हटाती है, पर इसी जीवन में मुक्ति केवल बुद्धि के द्वारा काम करने वाले ज्ञान से मिलती है। फिर वे बताते हैं कि जानने योग्य क्या है: शिव, जो शुद्ध प्रकाश हैं, स्वतन्त्र, सर्वव्यापी, नित्य और सब रूपों वाले, अपनी शक्तियों से अभिन्न, जिनकी स्वतन्त्रता ही लोकों, तत्त्वों और जीवों के पूरे विस्तार के रूप में दिखती है। भैरव, देव, पति और शिव नामों की व्याख्या करते हुए वे दिखाते हैं कि हर पूजा में एक ही संवित् पूज्य है और दूसरे देवताओं की पूजा भी अन्ततः उसी तक पहुँचती है। इससे वे उपायों को निकालते हैं: उपायरहित अनुपाय, इच्छा का शाम्भव उपाय, ज्ञान का शाक्त उपाय और क्रिया का आणव उपाय — जिन सबका सार ज्ञान है, क्योंकि क्रिया स्थूल हुआ ज्ञान ही है। फिर यह विचार कि जिज्ञासा स्वयं उद्देश, लक्षण और परीक्षा के रूप में संवित् की तीन शक्तियों की क्रीड़ा है; और अन्त में सैंतीसों आह्निकों की विषय-सूची और पूरे उपदेश का सार: आत्मा संवित् है, अपने ही प्रकाश का छिपना बन्धन है और उसका खुलना मोक्ष।

अथ द्वितीयमाह्निकम् The Way Without Means अनुपायः Verses 1–50

The second āhnika takes up the first of the four ways named in the first: anupāya, the way without means. Abhinavagupta begins by facing the obvious objection — if there is no means, what is the point of teaching? — and answers that a single teaching may be given, after which nothing more is needed. The heart of the argument is that consciousness shines by itself. Every means, outer or inner, ritual or contemplative, depends on consciousness in order to work at all, so none of them can be a means to consciousness; trying to reach it through a practice is like holding up a firefly to see the sun. Attention itself is set aside: there is nowhere to place it, since what is full needs none and what is not full can never become real. Blue, yellow, pleasure, pain, bondage and liberation are all simply light, and that light is Śiva; the word "one" here denies any second, it does not count. This reality is not power nor the possessor of power, not the object of worship nor the worshipper, not mantra, not initiation, not existent, not non-existent, not both — it is anuttara, the highest, beyond every description. Those in whom this has risen see the whole world melted in the fire of Bhairava; for them there is no rite, no rank, no purpose left except grace, and even those who merely see them are transformed. Only when such a person wishes to help those whose consciousness is not yet pure does he take up methods suited to them, which is why he still studies the scriptures on means. The āhnika closes by telling the disciple: once doubt has cleared, touch the feet of the Lord who shines in the sky of the heart like the sun. दूसरा आह्निक पहले आह्निक में गिनाए गए चार उपायों में से पहले — अनुपाय, उपाय-रहित मार्ग — को उठाता है। अभिनवगुप्त पहले स्वाभाविक आपत्ति का सामना करते हैं — यदि कोई उपाय नहीं तो उपदेश का क्या अर्थ? — और उत्तर देते हैं कि एक बार उपदेश हो सकता है, उसके बाद कुछ और नहीं चाहिए। तर्क का हृदय यह है कि संवित् स्वयं प्रकाशित है। हर उपाय, बाहरी या भीतरी, कर्म या भावना, काम करने के लिए संवित् पर ही निर्भर है, इसलिए कोई भी उपाय संवित् तक पहुँचने का साधन नहीं हो सकता; किसी अभ्यास से उस तक पहुँचने की कोशिश सूर्य को देखने के लिए जुगनू उठाने जैसी है। ध्यान लगाना भी छोड़ दिया जाता है: उसे रखने की जगह ही नहीं, क्योंकि जो पूर्ण है उसे ध्यान की ज़रूरत नहीं और जो अपूर्ण है वह कभी सत् नहीं हो सकता। नीला, पीला, सुख, दुःख, बन्धन और मोक्ष — सब केवल प्रकाश हैं, और वह प्रकाश शिव है; यहाँ "एक" शब्द दूसरे का निषेध करता है, गिनती नहीं। यह तत्त्व न शक्ति है न शक्तिमान्, न पूज्य न पूजक, न मन्त्र, न दीक्षा, न सत्, न असत्, न दोनों — यह अनुत्तर है, हर वर्णन से परे। जिनमें यह उदित हो गया है, वे पूरे जगत् को भैरव की अग्नि में पिघला हुआ देखते हैं; उनके लिए न कोई क्रिया है, न कोई पद, और अनुग्रह के सिवा कोई प्रयोजन नहीं बचता; जो उन्हें केवल देखते हैं, वे भी बदल जाते हैं। केवल जब ऐसा व्यक्ति उन लोगों की सहायता करना चाहे जिनकी संवित् अभी निर्मल नहीं, तभी वह उनके अनुकूल विधियाँ अपनाता है — इसीलिए वह उपायों के शास्त्रों को अब भी पढ़ता है। आह्निक शिष्य से कहकर समाप्त होता है: शंका मिट जाने पर उस प्रभु के चरण छुओ जो हृदय के आकाश में सूर्य की तरह चमकता है।

अथ तृतीयमाह्निकम् The Śāmbhava Way शाम्भवोपायः Verses 1–294

The third āhnika teaches the Śāmbhava way, the path of the will, in which the world is seen at once, without thought-constructs, as one with the light of consciousness. Abhinavagupta begins from the freedom of that light and explains it through reflection: just as a face appears in a mirror without the mirror being changed, the whole universe appears as a reflection in consciousness — but here there is no original outside the mirror, for consciousness itself, out of its own freedom, is both the mirror and what shines in it. He then shows how that one power unfolds as the powers of will, knowledge and action and, from the Unsurpassed (anuttara, a), gives rise to the whole series of phonemes: the vowels as the inner movements of consciousness through bliss, will, unfolding and emission, and the consonants as the categories from earth to Śiva, down to kṣa. This alphabet of consciousness is the Mātṛkā, and its rearranged form the Mālinī, in which the powers and their holders are mixed and united. He describes the three lights of moon, sun and fire, the great mantra of I-ness, and the many groups of goddesses, from the two to the fifty, that are all only shapes of the one awareness. Finally he describes the Śāmbhava absorption itself: seeing every category, from earth to Śiva, as reflected in the vast mirror of one's own consciousness, with the threefold awareness "this arises from me, this rests in me, this is not different from me", one becomes Bhairava, and this is liberation while living. In this way no ritual, mantra or mudrā is needed; only a few, touched by the Lord, come to trust it, and for others the teacher learns the rites of initiation. तीसरा आह्निक शाम्भव उपाय सिखाता है — इच्छा का मार्ग, जिसमें संसार को एक ही बार में, बिना विकल्प के, चेतना के प्रकाश से अभिन्न देखा जाता है। अभिनवगुप्त उस प्रकाश की स्वतन्त्रता से शुरू करते हैं और उसे प्रतिबिम्ब के उदाहरण से समझाते हैं: जैसे दर्पण में चेहरा दिखता है और दर्पण बदलता नहीं, वैसे ही पूरा विश्व संवित् में प्रतिबिम्ब की तरह दिखता है — पर यहाँ दर्पण के बाहर कोई मूल वस्तु नहीं है, क्योंकि संवित् स्वयं अपनी स्वतन्त्रता से दर्पण भी है और उसमें चमकने वाली वस्तु भी। फिर वे दिखाते हैं कि वही एक शक्ति इच्छा, ज्ञान और क्रिया की शक्तियों के रूप में खुलती है और अनुत्तर (अ) से वर्णों की पूरी शृंखला को जन्म देती है: स्वर चेतना की भीतरी गति हैं — आनन्द, इच्छा, उन्मेष और विसर्ग से होकर — और व्यंजन पृथ्वी से शिव तक के तत्त्व हैं, क्ष तक। चेतना की यह वर्णमाला मातृका है, और उसका बदला हुआ क्रम मालिनी, जिसमें शक्तियाँ और शक्तिमान मिलकर एक हो जाते हैं। वे चन्द्र, सूर्य और अग्नि के तीन प्रकाशों, अहंभाव के महामन्त्र, और देवियों के अनेक समूहों का वर्णन करते हैं — दो से लेकर पचास तक — जो सब एक ही सजगता के रूप हैं। अन्त में वे शाम्भव समावेश का ही वर्णन करते हैं: पृथ्वी से शिव तक हर तत्त्व को अपनी ही संवित् के विशाल दर्पण में प्रतिबिम्बित देखते हुए, "यह मुझसे उत्पन्न हुआ है, यह मुझमें टिका है, यह मुझसे अभिन्न है" इस तीन तरह की सजगता के साथ साधक भैरव हो जाता है, और यही जीवन्मुक्ति है। इस मार्ग में किसी क्रिया, मन्त्र या मुद्रा की ज़रूरत नहीं; केवल कुछ थोड़े लोग, जिन्हें परमेश्वर ने छुआ है, इस पर विश्वास पाते हैं, और बाकी के लिए गुरु दीक्षा आदि की विधि सीखता है।

अथ चतुर्थमाह्निकम् The Śākta Way शाक्तोपायः Verses 1–279

The fourth āhnika teaches the Śākta way, the path of knowledge, for those who cannot enter the Śāmbhava state all at once. Its method is the purification of thought-constructs (vikalpa): one clear thought gives birth to a clearer one of the same kind, and so on, until awareness, grown ever more distinct, settles into its own spotless state beyond all thought and the light of Bhairava shines out on its own. The tool of this purification is sattarka, sound reasoning, which Abhinavagupta identifies with pure knowledge (śuddhavidyā) and with the will of the Lord; it comes from the teacher, from scripture, or from within oneself, and the one in whom it arises by itself is the true guru, the unmade guru, who needs no other means. Measured against it, the other limbs of yoga — restraints, postures, breath control, withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation and absorption — are only outer supports and never direct means to Śiva, since they work on the body and the breath while consciousness is free of both. Reasoning ripens into bhāvanā, the steady cultivation that makes the unclear clear and unfolds as the whole set of powers of consciousness: the wheel of the twelve goddesses through which awareness creates, holds and withdraws every object and rests in itself as the Lord of the wheel. From this Abhinavagupta explains the real meaning of ritual: the power of every mantra is the uncreated I-awareness at its heart; whatever a person rooted in that heart does or says is his japa, whatever form he shapes is his meditation, his very stance is mudrā, and the objects that enter the fire of his awareness are his offering. He then argues at length that purity and impurity are not qualities of things, as blue is, but attitudes of the knower, and that scriptural injunction and prohibition are equal: in this system nothing is enjoined and nothing forbidden, from liṅga worship and the marks of ascetics down to sacred places, lineages, names and signs, because none of these is a direct means to Śiva and none can break his undivided nature. The only rule is to hold the mind firmly on the real, taking up whatever means is at hand and letting it go when it has served; and only a rare person, moved by the Lord, comes to delight in this worship of Bhairava's supreme non-duality, in which the whole pomp of worldly life melts away like snow in summer. चौथा आह्निक शाक्त उपाय सिखाता है — ज्ञान का मार्ग, उनके लिए जो शाम्भव अवस्था में एक ही बार में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकते। इसकी विधि विकल्प का संस्कार है: एक स्पष्ट विचार अपने ही जैसे और स्पष्ट विचार को जन्म देता है, और इस तरह क्रम से संवित् अधिकाधिक स्पष्ट होती हुई अपने निर्मल, विकल्प-रहित स्वरूप में ठहर जाती है और भैरव का प्रकाश अपने आप चमक उठता है। इस संस्कार का साधन सत्तर्क है — सच्चा विवेक — जिसे अभिनवगुप्त शुद्धविद्या और परमेश्वर की इच्छा ही मानते हैं; वह गुरु से, शास्त्र से या अपने भीतर से आता है, और जिसमें वह अपने आप उठता है वही सच्चा गुरु है, अकल्पित गुरु, जिसे किसी और साधन की ज़रूरत नहीं। इसकी तुलना में योग के बाकी अंग — यम, नियम, आसन, प्राणायाम, प्रत्याहार, धारणा, ध्यान और समाधि — केवल बाहरी सहारे हैं और शिव तक पहुँचने के सीधे उपाय कभी नहीं, क्योंकि वे शरीर और प्राण पर काम करते हैं जबकि संवित् दोनों से मुक्त है। सत्तर्क पककर भावना बनता है — वह स्थिर अभ्यास जो अस्पष्ट को स्पष्ट करता है और संवित् की शक्तियों के पूरे समूह के रूप में खुलता है: बारह देवियों का वह चक्र जिसके द्वारा चेतना हर विषय को रचती, धारण करती और समेटती है और चक्रेश्वर के रूप में अपने में विश्राम करती है। इसी से अभिनवगुप्त अनुष्ठान का असली अर्थ बताते हैं: हर मन्त्र की शक्ति उसके हृदय में बसी अकृत्रिम अहं-संवित् है; उस हृदय में टिका व्यक्ति जो कुछ करता या बोलता है वही उसका जप है, जो रूप वह रचता है वही उसका ध्यान, उसकी स्थिति ही मुद्रा, और जो वस्तुएँ उसकी चेतना की अग्नि में प्रवेश करती हैं वही उसका होम। फिर वे विस्तार से दिखाते हैं कि शुद्धि और अशुद्धि नीले रंग की तरह वस्तुओं के गुण नहीं, जानने वाले के भाव हैं, और शास्त्र के विधि और निषेध समान हैं: इस मार्ग में न कुछ विहित है न कुछ निषिद्ध — लिङ्ग-पूजा और तपस्वियों के चिह्नों से लेकर तीर्थ, परम्परा, नाम और संकेत तक — क्योंकि इनमें से कोई शिव तक पहुँचने का सीधा उपाय नहीं है और कोई उनके अखण्ड स्वरूप का खण्डन नहीं कर सकता। एकमात्र नियम यह है कि मन को दृढ़ता से तत्त्व पर टिकाया जाए, जो उपाय पास हो उसे अपनाया जाए और काम हो जाने पर छोड़ दिया जाए; और परमेश्वर से प्रेरित कोई विरला ही भैरव के परम अद्वय की इस पूजा में आनन्द पाता है, जिसमें संसार का पूरा आडम्बर गर्मी में बर्फ की तरह पिघल जाता है।

अथ पञ्चममाह्निकम् The Āṇava Way आणवोपायः Verses 1–159

The fifth āhnika teaches the Āṇava way, the path for those who cannot yet steady their thought by its own freedom and need the help of other means. Abhinavagupta locates those means in the intellect, the breath and the body: even in these limited knowers the supreme reality shines, because none of them exists apart from consciousness. The first means is meditation in the intellect (buddhi-dhyāna): the yogi sees in the heart the free light that is the whole of reality, kindles there the fire of Bhairava from the friction of moon, sun and fire, contemplates the twelve goddesses of that wheel as it streams out through the senses and returns, and so dissolves the whole universe into his own awareness and sends it forth again, becoming Bhairava moment by moment. The second is uccāra, the rising of the breath: through the five movements from prāṇa to vyāna the seven kinds of bliss unfold, up to the bliss of the universe (jagadānanda), and by the joining of prāṇa and apāna and the rise through the trident of the three channels the visarga comes to rest in the upper kuṇḍalinī, drenching the world with the nectar of the sixteen lunar digits. He then describes the entry into the mantra ground taught in the Triśirobhairava, the tenfold void, the ten kinds of sound (rāva) of the Brahmayāmala, and the five signs that mark the onset of absorption — bliss, rising, trembling, sleep and whirling — with the cakras to which each belongs. The heart in which the uccāra rests is the liṅga, described as unmanifest, manifest-unmanifest and manifest, the threefold play of a single vibration, and the yoginī's heart from which every deity and the ever-new universe are born. After a brief treatment of karaṇa, the sevenfold practice that uses the body's instruments, he turns to varṇa: the letters, the seed-syllables of creation and dissolution, the mantra that is one's own vibration and the bindu blazing in the heart, all of which lead by their own light to oneness with Śiva. The āhnika closes by ordering the means — contemplation, meditation, uccāra, karaṇa, sound and the arrangement of places — from inner to outer, with the warning that without inner strength (vīrya) all of them are a dead body. पाँचवाँ आह्निक आणव उपाय सिखाता है — उनका मार्ग जो अभी अपने विकल्प को उसकी अपनी स्वतन्त्रता से स्थिर नहीं कर सकते और जिन्हें दूसरे साधनों की सहायता चाहिए। अभिनवगुप्त इन साधनों को बुद्धि, प्राण और देह में रखते हैं: इन सीमित प्रमाताओं में भी परम तत्त्व चमकता है, क्योंकि इनमें से कोई भी चेतना से अलग नहीं है। पहला साधन बुद्धि में ध्यान है: योगी हृदय में उस स्वतन्त्र प्रकाश को देखता है जो समस्त तत्त्वों का रूप है, वहाँ सोम, सूर्य और अग्नि के घर्षण से भैरव की अग्नि जलाता है, उस चक्र की बारह देवियों की भावना करता है जो इन्द्रियों से बाहर निकलकर लौटती हैं, और इस तरह सारे विश्व को अपनी संवित् में लीन करके फिर रचता है — क्षण-क्षण भैरव होता हुआ। दूसरा उच्चार है, प्राण का ऊपर उठना: प्राण से व्यान तक की पाँच वृत्तियों से सात आनन्द खुलते हैं, जगदानन्द तक; और प्राण-अपान के मिलन तथा तीन नाड़ियों के त्रिशूल से ऊपर चढ़ने पर विसर्ग ऊर्ध्व कुण्डलिनी में विश्राम पाता है, चन्द्रमा की सोलह कलाओं के अमृत से जगत् को सींचता हुआ। फिर वे त्रिशिरोभैरव में कहे मन्त्र-भूमि में प्रवेश, दस प्रकार के ख (शून्य), ब्रह्मयामल के दस प्रकार के राव (नाद), और समावेश के आरम्भ के पाँच लक्षण — आनन्द, उद्भव, कम्प, निद्रा और घूर्णि — तथा उनके चक्रों का वर्णन करते हैं। जिस हृदय में उच्चार विश्राम पाता है वह लिङ्ग है — अव्यक्त, व्यक्ताव्यक्त और व्यक्त, एक ही स्पन्दन की तीन तरह की क्रीड़ा, योगिनी का हृदय, जिससे हर देवता और नित्य नया विश्व जन्म लेता है। शरीर के साधनों से होने वाले सात प्रकार के करण की संक्षिप्त चर्चा के बाद वे वर्ण पर आते हैं: अक्षर, सृष्टि और संहार के बीज, अपना ही स्पन्दन-रूप मन्त्र और हृदय में धधकता बिन्दु — ये सब अपने ही प्रकाश से शिव के साथ एकता तक ले जाते हैं। अन्त में आह्निक उपायों का क्रम भीतर से बाहर की ओर रखता है — भावना, ध्यान, उच्चार, करण, ध्वनि और स्थान-कल्पना — इस चेतावनी के साथ कि भीतरी वीर्य के बिना ये सब मृत शरीर जैसे हैं।

अथ षष्ठमाह्निकम् The Path of Time कालाध्वा Verses 1–252

The sixth āhnika opens the outer part of the Āṇava way, the means that rest on a "place" (sthāna), and takes up the first of those places: the breath. Abhinavagupta explains that the whole sixfold path (adhvan) — words, mantras and letters on the side of time, and the kalās, tattvas and worlds on the side of space — is first of all set up in the breath, because time is nothing but the succession and non-succession that the one consciousness, the goddess Kālī, lets out of herself as the movement of the life-breath. He then measures that movement: from the heart to the dvādaśānta the breath travels thirty-six fingers, and in that single span lie the tuṭis, a day and a night, the sixteen lunar days with their eclipses at the joints of the fortnights, a year with its two solstices and the sun's passage through the twelve signs, and finally the whole of a sixty-year cycle. Days, months and years are shown in prāṇa, apāna, samāna, udāna and vyāna in turn, each breath carrying the same map at a different scale. From this he passes to the vast ages: the divine years, the four yugas, the days of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Rudra and Śrīkaṇṭha, up to the dissolutions in māyā, in Sadāśiva, in nāda and in the power of Śakti, each measured in parārdhas — and shows that all of them, creation and dissolution alike, are held within one breath, and the breath within consciousness, which is the goddess herself. अथ सप्तममाह्निकम् The Rise of the Wheels चक्रोदयः Verses 1–71

This short āhnika teaches the "rise of the wheels" (cakrodaya), the most secret part of the practice of counting the breath. The sixth āhnika showed how time is born in the breath and how the whole day, year and cosmic age fit into the 21,600 breaths of a day; here Abhinavagupta turns that knowledge into a method that needs effort. A mantra of a given number of syllables is a "wheel", and dividing the day's breaths by that number gives the number of times the wheel rises in a day — from 10,800 rises for a two-syllable mantra down to 200 for one of a hundred and eight syllables, and further to the subtlest fractions of a breath. As the yogin holds his attention on one such wheel, the breath is slowly swallowed, time contracts, and knowledge, no longer split by moments, becomes one full consciousness. Along the way he argues against the view that thought is momentary: a single cognition lasts as long as the throb of breath that carries it, and only so can it hold many things together. He then gives rules for japa, fire-offering and worship, all of which must be matched to the breath; mantras of two, three, seven or eight syllables are to be recited with their rise dissolved into śakti, garland-mantras only mentally, word-mantras up to the power of each word. The breath-cycle is divided into entry, rest and exit, and the middle rise is declared best for success.
