Chapter Six · The Eight Mātṛkās · Verses 1–108

This chapter teaches initiation through the letters themselves as living goddesses, the eight mātṛkās, each given her own meditation-verse. It describes the placing of these letter-goddesses on the body, the fire-offering made to them, and the consecration of the water-vessel and the nine-gemmed ring used in the rite.

Now I shall describe the letter-bodied goddess, the Mātṛkā — she who brings about the awakening of true knowledge. Her sage is declared to be Brahmā, and her metre is said to be Gāyatrī.

The best of teachers have declared Sarasvatī to be the presiding deity of this letter-goddess. Her six auxiliary limbs are assigned, in due sequence, by the six groups of consonants set amid the short and long vowels — excluding the four neuter ones, ṛ, ṝ, ḷ and ḹ.

The six auxiliary limbs are to be performed by the teachers together with each letter's own class. I take refuge in the Goddess of Speech, Vāgdevatā — her face, arms, feet and torso divided among the fifty letters; a shining crescent of the moon bound in her crown; her breasts full and high; in her lotus-hands she bears the wisdom-gesture, a rosary, a vessel brimming with nectar, and the book of knowledge; her radiance pure and white, and she possessing three eyes.

The seventh circle, then, is declared to be made with the weapons of the world-guardians, beginning with the thunderbolt. By this method one should thoroughly worship the Goddess of the Letters with all the ritual offerings.

Knowers of the tantras declare the deity of this placement to be Ardhanarishvara, the Lord who is half Goddess. With the seed-syllable formed from ha and sa, joined to the six long vowels, the preceptor should perform the six-limb placement on his own body.

For this placement the sage is as previously stated, and the metre is Gayatri; the wise point to the deity as Sammohini, the enchantress who brings every world under her sway. With the three seed-syllables each repeated, one should form the six limbs of the nyasa.

One should worship Sammohinī, she of auspicious rising, together with her attendant deities and the limb-mantras that are Śiva's own gift, offering her the full round of ritual upacāras. Having done this, I shall now declare the prapañca-yāga, the universal fire-offering made through the letters, which bestows the very attainment of being, consciousness, and bliss.

Having thus performed the fire-offering made of the letters, one becomes divine-bodied. The mantra-adept, having duly placed in the body the mother of the universe herself, attains this divinity.
