Chapter Fourteen·Sūrya and His Four Mantras·Verses 1–65
The fourteenth paṭala turns from the great goddesses of the preceding chapters to the Sun himself, Sūrya, and unfolds not one but four distinct mantras dedicated to him — the first chapter in the mantra-sādhana sequence built entirely around a single deity approached four different ways, rather than one deity per chapter (paṭalas 7, 8, 10, 11, 13) or several different deities in one chapter (paṭala 12). It opens with the "four-syllabled" mantra, whose seer is Aja and whose deity is named Bhuvaneśī — envisioned, strikingly, in an entirely feminine dhyāna as a golden, jewel-crowned "World-Mother" form of the solar radiance itself, complete with nine attendant śaktis and a seat invoking a goddess called Sārā (vv.1–17). A second, "unspoken" (ajapā) mantra follows, identified with the breath's own natural, ceaseless repetition of haṃsaḥ so'ham, paired with a dhyāna of Ardhanārīśvara, the half-Śiva-half-Pārvatī form, and a set of rites for curing poisoning — including snakebite from Takṣaka, the serpent-king himself (vv.18–35). A third, "Tilaka" mantra opens the paṭala's most elaborate ritual sequence: nine-planet worship laid out on an eight-petaled maṇḍala, with full navagraha iconography — Rāhu serpent-faced, Ketu with hands folded in añjali, Saturn fierce and fanged, each planet in its own colour — and directional fire-oblations promising victory in battle, freedom from disease, and long life (vv.36–52). The chapter closes with a fourth, eight-syllabled Saura mantra, its own dhyāna of the three-eyed, lotus-seated Sun bearing boon-granting and fear-dispelling gestures, and a closing procedure of abhiṣeka, guru-dakṣiṇā, and brahmin-feeding tied to the sacred numbers of the Vasus (eight) and the Ādityas (twelve) — promising the daily worshipper freedom from disease, poison, misfortune, and every affliction (vv.53–65). Several of the mantra-construction verses throughout use the same coded, bhūtasaṅkhyā-style compression seen in earlier paṭalas' densest passages, honestly flagged as doubtful rather than forced into confident decodings.

When (the mantra) is worshipped in the forward order — ha, which follows the sky and pours nectar on the earth, always with its dot (ṃ), and the two cool moons of the visarga (ḥ) coming out of the shining sa — then by these two bright lights of fire and moon, disease, untimely death, poison, burning and pain all go away.

Thus having worshipped the Sun-lord — reciting, making oblation, and performing abhiṣeka — the keen-minded one should give the guru a gift equal in number to the Vasus, together with a garment, and feed him; he should feed Brahmins equal in number to the Ādityas. Having thus learned the mantra, he should daily give argha, or on Sunday, with excellent conduct, to the Beloved of the planets.

Thus, whoever devotedly reveres the mantra of the Sun in this world, day after day, becomes endowed with accumulated fortune and free from disease within a year; having cast off all sin, untimely death, enemies, spirit-affliction, and the like, he lives happily — and may he attain the supreme state.

Thus ends the fourteenth paṭala in the Prapañcasāra, the work of the glorious Śaṅkarabhagavat — the great teacher, foremost of wandering ascetics of the highest order, disciple of the venerable Govindabhagavatpūjyapāda.
