Chapter Thirteen · Durgā, Vanadurgā, and Śūlinī · Verses 1–88

The thirteenth paṭala is given over to Durgā, and it is, fittingly, the most martial chapter in the work so far — a sustained manual for the protection of persons, cities, and armies, and for the destruction of enemies, that never once strays from the text's established practice of translating such material plainly and without apology. It opens with Durgā's own mantra: a meditation-image of her seated on a lion, bow and discus in hand, dūrvā-green and radiant, surrounded by nine attendant powers and eight weapons that double as the limbs of her worship. A second, closely related mantra follows for Vanadurgā, "the Durgā of the wild places" — and here the text does something it does nowhere else: rather than building the mantra from seed-syllables alone, it spells out an actual sentence in plain language, word by word, as the very substance of the mantra itself — "Arise! Why do you sleep? Fear has come upon me at the end..." — a rare glimpse of tantric mantra-construction treating ordinary speech as sacred formula. From here the paṭala turns unflinchingly to war. Arrows are anointed and charged before battle; effigies of enemies, carved from poison-wood and smeared with the fat of crow and owl, are cut and burned on the darkest night of the month; armies are immobilized in their tracks and then, by the same rite reversed, released; elephants and horses are blessed for health and vigor; and an entire city or kingdom may be sealed in protection by weapons forged from a single sacred tree and consecrated with the five products of the cow, so that wealth increases and no thief or enemy ever troubles it again. A brief third mantra turns to Mukunda, god of the discus, for a rite of quiet influence over another person's will. The chapter's final movement belongs to Śūlinī, the Trident-Bearer, mounted on a lion and surrounded by four sword-bearing maidens, whose worship is said to drive out spirits, cure madness, neutralize the poison of snake and scorpion alike, and scatter an opposing army merely by the piercing of a single named arrow. The paṭala closes by noting, almost as an aside, that its two central mantras — Durgā's and Vanadurgā's — differ from one another hardly at all.
