Jyeṣṭha opens with the Sun entering Gemini, the worship of a Brahmā image made of flour, and the Karavīra and Rambhā vows, with the general rule on when a tithi joined to the day before is taken. Then Umā's day, and the heart of the month: Daśaharā, the descent of the Gaṅgā on the bright tenth, with its ten conjunctions, its saṅkalpa, its bath, worship, gifts and fire offering, and the Gaṅgā hymn in full. Then the waterless Ekādaśī and its gift of a water pot, the worship of Trivikrama, the full-moon gifts and the three-night bilva vow, the Vaṭasāvitrī vow and its day, the Mahājyaiṣṭhī yoga, and the gifts of the month.

On the bright third of Jyeṣṭha is the Rambhā vow. Take the third joined to the tithi before. Wherever a tithi joined to the one before is to be taken, it must last more than two muhūrtas before sunset, not less. Even then, if on the next day the tithi lasts up to sunset, leave the earlier day. Take the later day, because there the tithi is whole and pure, though the rule says to take the earlier. And if on the earlier day it lasts less than two muhūrtas, and on the next day it ends before sunset, still take the later day. Reason it out the same way everywhere.

Gara is a half-tithi. Wednesday meeting Hasta makes the yoga called Ānanda. Of these, the tenth and Vyatīpāta are the main ones. So keep the Daśaharā vow on the day when the tenth is found in the forenoon with several conjunctions. If it is in the forenoon on both days, take the day with the most conjunctions. If Jyeṣṭha has an intercalary month, keep Daśaharā in that one, not in the regular month. For Ṛṣyaśṛṅga says, as quoted by Hemādri: "Daśaharā is not put off, nor are the four yuga-start days."

Here take the three days from the thirteenth so that the three nights fall right by the ruling on the full moon. Take the full moon joined to the fourteenth if it lasts more than three muhūrtas before sunset. If less, take the later day. The saying "The fourteenth spoils the next tithi by eighteen ghaṭikās" applies to vows other than Sāvitrī. For the Sāvitrī fast, a full moon joined by eighteen ghaṭikās is still taken.

Women everywhere keep a Sāvitrī vow that is worship only, without a fast. For that, follow Mādhava's view as written in the Nirṇayasindhu: the eighteen-ghaṭikā joining rule is about vows, gifts and the like, not about fasts. So if the fourteenth lasts eighteen ghaṭikās, take the later day for the worship vow. For the fast, the earlier day seems right to me. Break the fast at the end of the full moon.
