Pārvatī asks to hear of the Ūrdhvāmnāya and its mantra, the best of the best of all dharmas. Śiva ranks the levels of secrecy — Veda, śāstra and Purāṇa may be published, the Śaiva and Śākta Āgamas are secret, the Kula scriptures secret beyond secret, and this teaching the secret of those — and explains that five āmnāyas issued from his five faces: eastern, western, southern, northern and upper. The four are each a path to liberation, and whoever knows even one is freed, but the upper stands above them as Śiva's own nature, raising up what lies below, served only by the higher worlds, and yielding fruit beyond all the rest. A run of similes places it as Viṣṇu among gods, the sun among lights, Kāśī among tīrthas, Meru among mountains, gold among metals, the head among the limbs, musk among fragrances. It cannot be won by Vedas, Purāṇas, sacrifice, austerity or crores of vows, but only from the mouth of the guru, whom the seeker must search out; the one who knows it is himself the true guru, the seer, the yogin, Śiva — his mother is blessed, his ancestors freed, his mere presence brings prosperity and rain for ten yojanas. Śiva then maps the four lower āmnāyas onto creation, maintenance, dissolution and grace and onto the yogas of mantra, devotion, action and knowledge, counts their saṅketas (24, 25, 32, 36), and says the Ūrdhvāmnāya has none, being beyond rite. The second half turns to the Prāsāda-Parā mantra that presides over it, the supreme form of Śiva and Śakti together. It moves as the breath in every creature from Śiva down to the worm; the whole moving and unmoving world is stitched together by it and no more different from it than the breeze from the fan — as the sprout is in the seed, oil in sesame, heat in fire, ghee in milk, the tree in the banyan seed, so the cosmos abides in this mantra, and other mantras without it are food without salt. Its knower, though a dog-cooker, can install a deity; his every act becomes austerity and japa; the fourteen worlds abide in his body; gods and demons salute him; walking, standing, waking or sleeping, the mantra never fails. Every pair in the world — Śacī and Indra, Agni and Soma, bindu and nāda, Prakṛti and Puruṣa, word and meaning, injunction and prohibition — is Śiva and Śakti, so the mantra is the self of all, formless yet with rites, beyond qualities yet with them. A litany declares it the supreme knowledge, austerity, meditation, initiation, japa, vow, sacrifice, goal and secret, and graded fruits are set out for reciting it 108, 200, 300, 400 and 500 times — release from the five great sins, from all sins of countless births, the merit of all rites and tīrthas, the eight siddhis at one's door, the fourfold liberation, and beyond that a fruit Śiva says he cannot describe. The chapter closes with the maxims that nothing surpasses the guru, Śiva, the Veda, the Kaula view, Kula-knowledge, and liberation, and that all this is a mustard seed beside the mountain of the mantra's true greatness.
