Chapter One · The Condition of Embodied Souls · Verses 1–121

On the peak of Kailāsa Pārvatī puts the question that frames the whole Tantra: the countless souls in their many bodies are born and die in a hollow and dreadful saṃsāra, soiled by every sorrow, and none of them is ever happy — by what means is a soul set free? Śiva answers that there is one partless Śiva, of the nature of the supreme Brahman, self-luminous, changeless and without a second, and that the individual souls are portions of him, like sparks in a fire, divided off by beginningless ignorance, by the limiting conditions of the womb, and by their own merits and sins. They climb through the eighty-four lakh forms — the unmoving, worms, water-born, birds, beasts, men, the righteous, the gods — and only in a human body, won after thousands of births, is knowledge of the Truth possible; the one who wins it and does not carry himself across is a slayer of his own self. The body is therefore to be guarded as the vessel of every human goal, but guarded for the sake of dharma, dharma for the sake of knowledge, and knowledge for the sake of meditation. A long sequence of images then presses home the urgency: old age waits like a tigress, life drains like water from a cracked pot, the world drinks the wine of delusion and does not fear; riches are a dream, youth a flower, life a flash of lightning; Death enters children, the young, the old and the unborn alike, and even Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa run towards dissolution. Attachment is named the root of every fault — the tie to wife, wealth and kin is a binding without bonds, a poison in sweetness — and the company of the good and discrimination are the two eyes without which a man is blind. Śiva then turns on every counterfeit of liberation: ritualists lost in the elaborations of sacrifice, ascetics who dry the body, naked wanderers, ash-smearers, forest-dwellers, river-bathers, reciters and disputants, and asks of each whether donkeys, deer, frogs, parrots and pigs are thereby yogins too. Scripture cannot dispel delusion any more than talk of a lamp dispels darkness; the wise man takes its essence as a swan takes milk from water and then lays it aside, for liberation comes from knowledge alone, and that knowledge — beyond both duality and non-duality, hinging on the two words "mine" and "not mine" — is had only from the mouth of the guru. As long as desire, restlessness, striving and body-identification remain there can be no talk of the Truth; austerity, vows and pilgrimage last only until it is found. The chapter closes with the secret that the rest of the work will unfold: without the Kula-dharma there is no liberation.
