This chapter holds the whole Gītā in small. It opens with Arjuna in tears. Kṛṣṇa rebukes his faint-heartedness, but Arjuna still cannot decide, and at last he asks as a pupil: tell me what is truly good, I take refuge in you. Only then does the teaching begin. Kṛṣṇa first speaks of the Self (verses 11 to 30). The one who lives in the body was never born and never dies; bodies change as clothes are changed, but the dweller in them cannot be cut, burnt, wetted or dried. So there is no cause to grieve for the living or the dead. Then he speaks from Arjuna's own dharma as a warrior (31 to 38): a just war is an open door to heaven, and running from it brings sin and disgrace. From verse 39 he turns to yoga, the way of acting with an even mind. Only the action is in your hands, never its fruit; do your work steady in yoga, the same in success and failure, for evenness is yoga, and yoga is skill in action. When Arjuna asks what a person of steady wisdom is like (54), the last part answers: one who has let go of all desires and is content in the Self, unshaken by pain, free of craving, fear and anger, who draws the senses back like a tortoise its limbs. The chain from dwelling on objects to ruin (62 to 63) shows how the mind falls, and the calm of one who moves among objects without liking or loathing shows how it is steadied. The chapter ends on the Brahman state, which one who reaches it keeps even at the hour of death.

Explanation

The unreal has no being, and the real never ceases to be. Those who see the truth have seen the final truth of both.
Explanation
What changes, such as the body and pleasure and pain, is "unreal" in the sense that it does not stay. What never changes is "real". The Self is real in this sense, which is why its loss is not to be feared.

These bodies of the eternal, indestructible, immeasurable embodied one are said to have an end. So fight, descendant of Bharata.
Explanation
"So fight" is not a command to kill for its own sake. It removes the false reason for not fighting. Arjuna's duty stands, and grief over the body is no ground for leaving it.

It is never born and never dies. It did not come to be, and will not come to be again. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not slain when the body is slain.
Explanation

And even if you think it is constantly born and constantly dies, mighty-armed one, still you should not grieve like this.
Explanation
Here Kṛṣṇa argues from the other side. Even for one who does not accept an undying Self, grief is useless, because birth and death then follow each other by nature, as the next verse says.

Treat pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat as the same, and then get ready for battle. So you will incur no sin.
Explanation

Explanation

In this path no effort begun is lost, and no harm comes from it. Even a little of this practice saves one from great fear.
Explanation

The Vedas deal with the three guṇas. Arjuna, go beyond the three guṇas. Be free from the pairs of opposites, ever established in purity, free from the worry of getting and keeping, centred in the Self.

When he draws his senses back from their objects on all sides, as a tortoise draws in its limbs, his wisdom is established.
Explanation

When the embodied one does not take them in, the objects fall away, but the taste for them remains. When he has seen the Supreme, even the taste falls away.
Explanation

When a man dwells on objects, attachment to them arises. From attachment desire is born, and from desire comes anger.
Explanation

From anger comes delusion, and from delusion confusion of memory. When memory is lost, understanding is ruined, and when understanding is ruined, he perishes.
Explanation
