The Gītā opens not with teaching but with a crisis. The blind king Dhṛtarāṣṭra asks his minister Sañjaya what happened on the field of Kurukṣetra, and Sañjaya tells it as he sees it. Duryodhana goes to his teacher Droṇa and names the great warriors on both sides, anxious and boastful at once. Bhīṣma sounds his conch, both armies answer, and Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna blow their divine conches from a white-horsed chariot. Arjuna asks Kṛṣṇa to set the chariot between the two armies so that he can see whom he must fight. Kṛṣṇa places it before Bhīṣma and Droṇa and says only: look at these Kurus gathered here. Arjuna looks, and sees fathers, grandfathers, teachers, uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons and friends. His limbs give way, his mouth dries, his bow slips from his hand. He argues that killing his kin brings no good: no kingdom is worth it, the family's dharma will perish, its women will go astray, mixed birth will follow, and the ancestors will fall. He ends by saying he would rather be killed unarmed, and sinks down in the chariot, dropping his bow. The chapter is the question that the rest of the Gītā answers. Arjuna's reasons sound like dharma, but they grow out of attachment and grief, and that confusion is what Kṛṣṇa takes up in the second chapter.

Sañjaya, my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu gathered on the field of dharma, at Kurukṣetra, eager to fight. What did they do?
Explanation
The blind king asks, and the whole Gītā is Sañjaya's answer. Kurukṣetra was already known as a holy field, a place of sacrifice. The king calls his own sons "mine" and his brother's sons "the Pāṇḍavas", and that split between "mine" and "theirs" is the root of the war and of Arjuna's grief to come.

Seeing the army of the Pāṇḍavas drawn up in battle order, King Duryodhana went up to his teacher and spoke these words.
Explanation

Madhusūdana, I do not want to kill them, even if they kill me. Not for rule over the three worlds, much less for this earth.
Explanation

Janārdana, what joy could we have in killing the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra? Only sin would cling to us for killing these aggressors.
Explanation
An ātatāyī is an aggressor: one who sets fire to a home, gives poison, attacks with a weapon, robs wealth or land, or seizes another's wife. The law allows such a man to be killed. Arjuna admits the Kauravas are aggressors, yet still fears the sin of killing kin.

When a family is destroyed, its age-old dharma perishes. When dharma is lost, adharma overwhelms the whole family.
Explanation

Kṛṣṇa, when adharma prevails, the women of the family go astray. When the women go astray, descendant of Vṛṣṇi, the varṇas become mixed.
Explanation
Varṇasaṅkara means children born outside the order of marriage, who do not know their own lineage and so cannot keep its rites. Arjuna is reasoning from the law-books of his time.

This mixing only leads the family and its destroyers to hell. Their ancestors fall too, deprived of the offerings of rice-balls and water.

Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down on the seat of the chariot, his mind troubled by grief.
Explanation
Arjuna's argument is not wrong in each point, but it rests on a false base: he thinks of the body as the person and of kin as "mine". That is why his grief leads him to drop his duty. The rest of the Gītā begins by removing that base.
