The second chapter praised a steady, settled understanding above action, yet told Arjuna to fight. So he opens this one confused: if understanding is better, why push him into a terrible deed? Kṛṣṇa answers that there are two paths, knowledge for those who renounce and action for those who work, and that no one reaches freedom from action simply by not starting it. No one can stay still even for a moment, because nature keeps the body and mind moving; a man who holds his limbs still while his mind runs after pleasures is a pretender. The better way is to do one's duty without attachment. Action done as sacrifice does not bind. The creator made people together with sacrifice, and the world turns on a wheel of giving: gods nourish men, men nourish gods, food comes from rain, rain from sacrifice, and sacrifice from action. The one who eats without giving back is a thief. Only a person who is wholly content in the Self has nothing left to do, and even he, like Janaka, or like Kṛṣṇa himself who needs nothing, keeps working so that ordinary people are not led astray; the wise should not unsettle those attached to work, but set an example. All actions are done by the guṇas of nature, and only the deluded ego thinks "I am the doer". Kṛṣṇa asks Arjuna to give all his works to Him and fight without fever, and warns that one's own duty, even done poorly, is better than another's done well. Arjuna then asks what drives a man to wrong against his will. The answer is desire, which turns into anger when blocked: born of rajas, never satisfied, it covers knowledge as smoke covers fire. It lives in the senses, mind and intellect. The chapter ends by telling Arjuna to master the senses first and, knowing the Self as higher than the intellect, to kill this enemy.

A person does not gain freedom from action by not starting actions. Nor does he reach perfection merely by giving them up.

No one can ever stay even for a moment without acting. Everyone is helplessly made to act by the guṇas born of nature.
Explanation
The guṇas are the three strands of nature: sattva (clarity), rajas (drive) and tamas (inertia). As long as a person takes himself to be the body and mind, these keep him moving: breathing, thinking, wanting. So the choice is never between acting and not acting, only between acting well and acting badly.

Living beings come from food. Food comes from rain. Rain comes from sacrifice, and sacrifice is born of action.
Explanation

Know that action arises from the Veda, and the Veda arises from the Imperishable. So the all-pervading Brahman is always present in sacrifice.
Explanation

But for the person who delights only in the Self, is fulfilled in the Self and content in the Self alone, no duty remains.
Explanation

Hand over all actions to me, with your mind fixed on the Self. Free from craving and from the sense of "mine", fight, with the fever gone.
Explanation
The "fever" is the grief and agitation Arjuna showed in the first chapter. Offering the work to God removes the private stake in it, and with that the anguish goes.

Even the wise act in keeping with their own nature. Beings follow their nature. What will forcing do?
Explanation
"Nature" here is the set of tendencies formed by one's past actions. It cannot simply be suppressed by force. This is why people disregard the teaching, and it leads straight into the next verse: nature cannot be forced, but one need not be ruled by liking and disliking.

Liking and disliking are set in the object of each sense. One should not fall into their power, for they are robbers on his road.
Explanation

Your own duty, even done imperfectly, is better than another's duty done well. Death in your own duty is better. Another's duty is full of danger.
Explanation

It is desire, it is anger, born of the guṇa of rajas. It devours everything and is very sinful. Know this to be the enemy here.
Explanation

As fire is covered by smoke, as a mirror by dust, as an unborn child by the womb, so is this covered by desire.
Explanation
The three images show three degrees of covering: smoke hides fire only lightly and blows away; dust must be wiped off a mirror; the child stays covered until birth. Desire can cover knowledge lightly or deeply.

Explanation

The second chapter praised a settled understanding over action done for results, yet ended by telling Arjuna to fight. Arjuna reads this as a contradiction: if understanding is better, the killing of a war looks unnecessary.
