Chapter Four · The Yoga of Knowledge and the Renunciation of Action · Verses 1–42

Kṛṣṇa begins by giving the teaching a lineage: he taught it to Vivasvān, the Sun, who taught Manu, who taught Ikṣvāku; kings who were sages knew it, and over long time it was lost. He gives it now to Arjuna because Arjuna is his devotee and friend. Arjuna objects that Kṛṣṇa was born long after the Sun, and so Kṛṣṇa speaks of his own births. Both of them have had many; Kṛṣṇa remembers his and Arjuna does not. Unborn and imperishable, he still comes into being through his own power, whenever dharma declines, to protect the good, destroy wrongdoers and set dharma on its feet again. Whoever truly knows his divine birth and action is not born again. Everyone, whatever path they take, is on his path, and he meets people in the way they come to him. He made the four classes by guṇa and work, yet he is not the doer, and actions do not stain him; one who knows this is not bound either. Then the chapter turns to what action really is. The wise see inaction in action and action in inaction: one who has let go of attachment to results, content and depending on nothing, does nothing even while fully at work, and his actions are burnt in the fire of knowledge. A long list follows of what can count as sacrifice: offering to gods, offering the self into Brahman, restraint of the senses, offering of wealth, austerity, yoga, study, breath control and regulated eating, all culminating in the verse that sees offering, offerer, fire and act as Brahman. Of these the sacrifice of knowledge is the highest, for all action ends in knowledge. It is to be learned from those who have seen the truth, by humble approach, questioning and service. Knowledge is the raft that carries even the worst sinner across, the fire that burns all actions to ash, the purest thing there is. It is gained by one who has faith, devotion to it and control of the senses, while the doubter is lost in this world and the next. The chapter ends by telling Arjuna to cut his doubt with the sword of knowledge, take to yoga, and stand up.

I taught this imperishable yoga to Vivasvān, the Sun. Vivasvān told it to Manu, and Manu told it to Ikṣvāku.

Explanation

Manu is the father of humankind and Ikṣvāku the first king of the solar line. The teaching is placed at the root of kingship: it was meant for rulers, who have to act in the world, not only for hermits.

Today I have taught you that same ancient yoga, because you are my devotee and my friend. For this is the supreme secret.

It is a "secret" not because it is hidden on purpose but because it is only received by one who comes to it with love and trust.

Your birth was later and Vivasvān's birth was earlier. How am I to understand that you taught it in the beginning?

Explanation

Arjuna still sees Kṛṣṇa as a man of his own age. The question opens the way for the teaching on the Lord's births.

Though I am unborn and imperishable, and Lord of all beings, I take charge of my own nature and come into being by my own power.

Explanation

This is the difference between the Lord's birth and ours. We are born under the power of nature and our past actions; he is born by his own will, keeping nature under his control. He appears to be born and to have a body, while remaining what he is.

In whatever way people come to me, in that same way I receive them. Son of Pṛthā, people follow my path in every way.

Explanation

The Lord answers each seeker in kind: results to those who want results, freedom to those who want freedom. Whatever god or path people follow, they are in the end walking toward him. The second line is the same as 3.23, where it meant that people copy the great; here it means every path leads to him.

Desiring success in their actions, people here worship the gods, for in the human world success born of action comes quickly.

Explanation

This explains why most people seek results rather than freedom: results come quickly and are easy to see, while knowledge is slow and hard.

I made the four classes by the division of guṇa and work. Though I am their maker, know me to be not the doer, the imperishable.

Explanation

The classes are defined by guṇa and work, that is, by one's nature and the kind of work suited to it. The Lord is "maker" from the point of view of the world, but in his own being he does nothing, since action belongs to nature.

Actions do not stain me, and I have no longing for their fruit. One who knows me in this way is not bound by actions.

Explanation

One who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is wise among people. He is steady in yoga, even while doing all his work.

Explanation

Activity belongs to body, senses and mind; the Self does nothing. So in all that is done, the wise see the Self that does nothing: that is inaction in action. And sitting still with the thought "I am doing nothing" is itself an act of the ego: that is action in inaction. One who sees this is free while working.

Explanation

"Scheming" is the planning of what one will get from an act. Without it, action leaves no seed of future bondage; this is what "burnt" means.

The offering is Brahman. The oblation is Brahman. It is poured by Brahman into the fire that is Brahman. Brahman alone is reached by one who sees Brahman in every action.

Explanation

"The offering" here is the ladle or act of offering. Every part of the rite (the instrument, the thing offered, the fire, the one who offers, the act and its goal) is seen as Brahman. For such a person there is nothing outside the Real, so action no longer binds. The verse is often recited before meals.

Some make their sacrifice with wealth, some with austerity, some with yoga. Likewise others, striving and of strict vows, make their sacrifice with study and knowledge.

Explanation

"Wealth" means giving: gifts, public works and the like. "Study" is the recitation and study of scripture.

Others offer the incoming breath into the outgoing, and the outgoing into the incoming. Devoted to breath control, they stop the movement of breath in and out.

Explanation

These are the three stages of breath control: breathing out, breathing in, and holding the breath.

Others, regulating their food, offer the breaths into the breaths. All of these know sacrifice, and by sacrifice their sins are wiped out.

Explanation

Many kinds of sacrifice like these are set out in the words of the Veda. Know them all to be born of action. Knowing this, you will be freed.

Scorcher of foes, the sacrifice of knowledge is better than sacrifice made with things. Son of Pṛthā, all action without exception comes to its end in knowledge.

Explanation
