Chapter Five · The Yoga of Renouncing Action · Verses 1–29

The fourth chapter praised knowledge that burns up action and still ended by telling Arjuna to stand up and act. So Arjuna asks plainly: you praise giving up action and you praise doing it; which one is better? The answer holds the two together. Both lead to the highest good, but for a man in Arjuna's place, action done in yoga is better, because true renunciation is hard to reach without it. The real renouncer is the one who neither hates nor craves, whatever his outer life looks like. The one who knows the truth sees that the senses move among their objects while he himself does nothing; he offers every act to Brahman and is no more stained by it than a lotus leaf by water. The Lord does not take on anyone's sin or merit; ignorance covers knowledge, and when knowledge removes it, it lights up the highest like the sun. Such a person sees the same Brahman in a learned priest, a cow, an elephant, a dog and an outcaste. His joy is inside, not in sense contact, whose pleasures begin and end and breed sorrow. He can bear the rush of desire and anger in this life, before the body falls. The chapter closes with a first glimpse of meditation (outer contacts shut out, the gaze between the brows, the breath made even), which the next chapter takes up in full, and with the Lord named as the enjoyer of all offering and austerity and the friend of every being.

O Kṛṣṇa, you praise giving up actions, and then again you praise yoga, doing them. Of these two, tell me clearly and for certain the one that is better.

Explanation

Arjuna has heard both in the last chapter: knowledge that ends all action (4.33–37) and the command to take up yoga and fight (4.42). He asks for one plain answer.

Renunciation and the yoga of action both lead to the highest good. But of the two, the yoga of action is better than giving up action.

Explanation

Better, that is, for one who does not yet stand in full knowledge. Giving up outer action without inner purity only drops the work and keeps the attachment.

The childish, not the wise, speak of Sāṅkhya and Yoga as separate. One who stands fully in even one of them gains the fruit of both.

But renunciation, O mighty-armed one, is hard to attain without yoga. The sage joined in yoga reaches Brahman before long.

Explanation

This is why action is called better in verse 2: selfless action purifies the mind, and a pure mind is what real renunciation needs.

The Lord does not create doership for the world, nor actions, nor the link between action and its fruit. It is nature that is at work.

Explanation

Doing and enjoying belong to nature (prakṛti), working through the body and mind. The Self in its own being stays untouched by them.

The all-pervading Lord takes on no one's sin, nor anyone's merit. Knowledge is covered by ignorance, and by that living beings are deluded.

Explanation

People think God rewards and punishes as if he took part in their deeds. The binding comes from their own ignorance, which makes them claim the deeds as theirs.

Knowing me as the enjoyer of all offerings and austerities, the great Lord of all worlds, and the friend of all beings, one attains peace.

Explanation

A suhṛd is a friend who does good without expecting return. Knowing the Lord as such a friend removes fear, and with fear gone, peace comes.
