The last chapter ended with a short sketch of meditation. This one gives the full practice, but it first ties meditation back to action. The true renouncer and yogi is the one who does his duty without leaning on its fruit, not the one who merely gives up the sacred fire or all activity. Action is the means for one who is climbing towards yoga; calm is the means for one who has reached it, and he is known by having given up every self-made plan. Then the key teaching: a person must raise himself by his own effort and never drag himself down, for his own mind is his only friend and his only enemy. The practice follows in plain terms: a clean, quiet place, a firm seat neither too high nor too low, the body, head and neck held straight and still, the gaze resting on the tip of the nose, the mind fixed on the Lord. Moderation is essential; yoga is not for one who eats too much or too little, sleeps too much or too little. The mind of the settled yogi is like a lamp in a windless place that does not flicker, and the joy found there is so great that no loss can shake it. Whenever the mind wanders, bring it back, gently and without giving up. Arjuna objects that the mind is as hard to hold as the wind; Kṛṣṇa agrees and gives the answer that has been repeated ever since: it is held by practice and by detachment. Arjuna then asks what happens to one who has faith but falls from yoga before completing it. The answer is one of the most consoling in the Gītā: no one who does good ever comes to a bad end; such a person is born again in a pure and prosperous home or in a family of yogis, picks up the thread of the past, and goes on to the goal. The chapter closes by placing the yogi above the ascetic, the scholar and the ritualist, and the devoted yogi highest of all.

Whoever does the action that ought to be done without leaning on its fruit is a renouncer and a yogi too. Not the one who has merely given up the sacred fire, nor the one who has given up all action.
Explanation

For one who is moderate in food and recreation, moderate in effort at work, and moderate in sleep and waking, yoga becomes the destroyer of sorrow.
Explanation

O mighty-armed one, fallen from both, without support, confused on the path to Brahman, does he not perish like a torn cloud?
Explanation
"Both" are this world's rewards, which he gave up, and the goal of yoga, which he did not reach. A small cloud torn from one mass and not joined to another simply dissolves.

O son of Pṛthā, there is no ruin for him either here or hereafter. For no one who does good, my dear, ever comes to a bad end.
Explanation

The yogi is greater than ascetics. He is held greater than scholars too. The yogi is greater than those who perform rites for reward. So be a yogi, O Arjuna.
