Chapter Seven·The Yoga of Knowledge and Realisation·Verses 1–30
The sixth chapter ended by calling the yogi who worships the Lord with faith the best of all. This chapter begins to show who that Lord is, so that he can be known whole, both in teaching and in direct experience. Among thousands, few strive, and among those who strive, few know him truly. He has two natures. The lower is eightfold: earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego, the stuff of which the world is made. The higher is the living principle that holds the world up. Everything comes from these two, and he is the source and end of it all; the world hangs on him like pearls on a thread. Then a series of pictures: he is the taste in water, the light of sun and moon, Om in the Vedas, sound in space, manhood in men, the pure fragrance of earth, the life in all beings, the intellect of the wise, strength free of lust, and desire that does not go against dharma. All states of goodness, passion and dullness come from him, yet he is not in them; they are in him. The world, deluded by these three guṇas, does not know him beyond them. This divine māyā is hard to cross, but those who take refuge in him cross it. Four kinds of good people worship him: the one in trouble, the seeker of knowledge, the one who wants gain, and the one who knows. All are noble, but the one who knows is his very self, and such a great soul, who sees that Vāsudeva is all, is very rare. Those whose understanding is carried off by desires worship other gods, and the Lord himself makes their faith steady and grants what they ask, but those fruits end. The unwise think the unmanifest has become a mere person; veiled by his own yogamāyā, he is not seen by all. The chapter closes with a list of terms (Brahman, adhyātma, karma, adhibhūta, adhidaiva, adhiyajña) that those who know him whole understand, and that the next chapter will explain.

O son of Pṛthā, hear how, with your mind set on me, practising yoga and taking refuge in me, you will know me whole and without doubt.
Explanation
"Whole" means knowing him in all his aspects, his lower and higher natures and all that the chapter goes on to name.

Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego: this is my nature, divided eightfold.

The five elements here stand for their subtle forms as well, and mind, intellect and ego for the finer causes behind them. Together they make up all that can be known as object.

All these are noble indeed, but the one who knows is my very self; that is my view. For with his mind joined to me, he has taken his stand in me alone as the highest goal.
Explanation
The other three are also called noble, since they turn to the Lord and not elsewhere for what they want.
