Chapter Eight·The Yoga of the Imperishable Brahman·Verses 1–28
The seventh chapter closed with six terms Kṛṣṇa used without explaining them: Brahman, the inner self, action, the realm of beings, the realm of the gods and the realm of sacrifice, and a promise that those who know him in all of them know him even at the hour of death. Arjuna asks what each term means and how a disciplined person knows God at that hour. Kṛṣṇa answers the six in two verses and spends the rest of the chapter on the seventh question, the moment of death. The principle is simple: whatever a person holds in mind when leaving the body, that is what he becomes, because it is what his whole life has trained the mind to hold. So the teaching is not a last-minute technique but a lifelong habit: remember me at all times, and fight. For the yogī who can still do so, Kṛṣṇa describes a deliberate departure: the senses closed, the mind held in the heart, the breath raised to the crown, the syllable Om on the lips. Then the chapter widens to the scale of the cosmos. Every world, even Brahmā's, comes and goes; a day of Brahmā lasts a thousand ages, beings come forth at its dawn and dissolve at its dusk. Beyond that unmanifest there is another, eternal unmanifest that does not perish, and reaching it there is no return. The chapter closes on the two paths the departed take, the bright one of no return and the dark one that leads back, and says that the yogī who knows both is never confused, and goes beyond every merit that scripture promises.

Brahman is the supreme imperishable. One's own being is called the inner self. The offering that brings beings into existence is named action.
Explanation
"Action" here is not everyday work but the offering in sacrifice, the giving up of something to the gods, which in Vedic thought sets the whole cycle of rain, food and birth in motion (3.14). "One's own being" is the self as it lives in each body.

The realm of beings is perishable existence. The realm of the gods is the Person. And the realm of sacrifice, here in the body, is I myself, O best of the embodied.
Explanation

Whatever state of being a person remembers when he gives up the body at the end, O son of Kuntī, to that alone he goes, for he has always been shaped by that thought.
Explanation

Even the highest heaven is a place one returns from, because it too is earned by merit and lasts only as long as the merit does. Reaching God is not reaching a place, so there is nothing to fall back from.

Those who know that a day of Brahmā lasts a thousand ages, and that his night ends only after a thousand ages, are the people who truly know day and night.
Explanation
An "age" here is a full cycle of the four yugas. Next to such a day, a human lifetime is nothing; the point is to show how brief even the longest-lived worlds really are.

This same multitude of beings comes into being again and again and dissolves at the coming of night, helplessly, O son of Pṛthā, and comes forth again at the coming of day.
Explanation
"Helplessly" is the key word. Beings do not choose to return; they are carried by their own past actions until they are free of them.

But beyond that unmanifest there is another being, unmanifest and eternal, higher than it. When all beings perish, it does not perish.
Explanation

Now I will tell you, O best of the Bharatas, the times at which yogīs depart and do not return, and at which they depart and return.
Explanation
"Time" in the next verses is widely read as a path. Many take each marker named there, the fire, the day, the bright fortnight and so on, as a presiding power that guides the departed along one road or the other; others take them more literally as times of death.

Smoke, night, the dark fortnight, the six months of the sun's southern course: the yogī who goes on that path reaches the light of the moon and returns.
Explanation
