Chapter Nine · The Yoga of the Royal Knowledge and the Royal Secret · Verses 1–34

Kṛṣṇa calls what he now teaches the king of all knowledge and the king of all secrets: it can be seen directly, it is in keeping with dharma, easy to practise, and it never fails. The secret is his relation to the world. All of it is pervaded by him in his unmanifest form, all beings rest in him, yet he does not rest in them, just as the wind moves everywhere within space and space is not touched by it. At the end of each cycle beings return into his nature, and at the start of the next he sends them out again, not bound by any of it, sitting by like one who is unconcerned while nature does the work under his watch. Fools despise him when he takes a human body; great souls know him as the source of beings and worship him in many ways. He is the ritual and the offering, the father and mother of the world, the goal, the witness, the refuge and the friend. Those who follow the Vedic rites for heaven get heaven, and come back when their merit is spent; those who think of him alone are cared for by him in everything. Even worship of other gods reaches him, though not in the right way. He accepts the simplest gift, a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, when it is given with love, and asks that every act be offered to him. He is the same to all beings, no one is hateful to him and no one dear, but those who worship him with love are in him and he in them. Even a person of very bad conduct who turns to him wholly is to be counted good, for he has made the right decision. Whoever takes refuge in him reaches the highest goal, whatever their birth. The chapter closes with the verse that sums up its path: fix your mind on me, be devoted to me, worship me, bow to me, and you will come to me.

Now I will tell you, who do not find fault, this most secret knowledge together with its realisation. Knowing it, you will be freed from all that is evil.

Explanation

"Knowledge" is understanding the truth; "realisation" is living it in one's own experience. The listener's one qualification is that he does not look for faults in the teacher.

And yet beings do not rest in me. See my divine power! My self sustains beings and brings them into existence, yet it does not rest in them.

Explanation

This seems to contradict the last verse, and is meant to. Some read it as saying that beings only appear to rest in God, since from his side there is nothing separate from him; others as saying that God upholds beings without being touched or limited by them, and stays beyond all he supports. Either way, holding both statements together is the "divine power" Arjuna is asked to see.

And those actions do not bind me, O winner of wealth. I sit like one who is unconcerned, unattached to those actions.

Explanation

"Unconcerned" does not mean indifferent to beings. It means having nothing to gain from creating them, and so no stake that could bind.

Others worship me by offering the sacrifice of knowledge: as one with themselves, as separate from them, or in many ways, as the one whose face is everywhere.

Explanation

The verse makes room for different approaches at once: one who sees no difference between himself and God, one who worships God as a master distinct from himself, and one who sees God in the many forms of the world.

"Friend" here means one who does good without expecting anything back. "Treasure-house" is where all things are laid up when the world dissolves, to be drawn out again.

Even those devoted to other gods who worship them filled with faith, O son of Kuntī, are worshipping me alone, though not in the right way.

Explanation

"Not in the right way" means without knowing who really receives the worship. The worship is not wasted, but its reach is limited by that lack of knowledge, as the next verse says.

Whoever offers me with love a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I accept that offering of love from one whose heart is pure.

Explanation

The things listed are the cheapest and easiest to find. What God accepts is the love behind the gift, not its value; "accept" is literally "eat", as a friend eats what is offered.

In this way you will be freed from the bonds of action and their good and bad results. With your self joined in the yoga of renunciation, you will be set free and come to me.

Explanation

"Renunciation" here is not leaving the world but giving up one's claim on actions and their fruit by offering them to God.

I am the same to all beings. No one is hateful to me and no one dear. But those who worship me with love are in me, and I too am in them.

Explanation

God has no favourites, as the sun has none. But a house with open windows is filled with light and a closed one is not; the difference lies in the one who opens himself.

Even if a person of very bad conduct worships me with undivided devotion, he should be considered good, for he has resolved rightly.

Explanation

What makes him good is not his past but his decision. Once the resolve to turn to God is firm, the change of conduct follows, as the next verse says.

For those who take refuge in me, O son of Pṛthā, even those of low birth, women, merchants and labourers, they too reach the highest goal.

Explanation

How much more, then, holy brāhmaṇas and devoted royal sages! Having come into this passing, joyless world, worship me.

Explanation

Arjuna is himself a royal sage by birth. The world is called joyless not to make him despair of it but to point him to what is lasting while he is still in it.
