Chapter Ten·The Yoga of Divine Manifestations·Verses 1–42
Kṛṣṇa speaks again because Arjuna is glad to hear him. Neither gods nor sages know his origin, since he is the origin of them all; whoever knows him as unborn and the great Lord of the worlds is freed from every sin. Every quality in beings, understanding, forgiveness, truth, calm, joy and sorrow, fear and fearlessness, comes from him alone, and so do the seven great seers and the four Manus from whom all creatures descend. The wise who know this worship him with love, their minds and lives given to him, talking of him with one another and finding joy in it; to such people he gives the understanding by which they reach him, and from within their own hearts he destroys the darkness of ignorance with the lamp of knowledge. Arjuna answers with a hymn, calling him the supreme Brahman, the highest abode, the eternal divine Person, as the seers have said and as Kṛṣṇa now says himself, and asks to hear in full the powers by which he fills the worlds, so that he may know where to think of him. Kṛṣṇa agrees to name the chief ones, since there is no end to them in detail. He is the self in the heart of every being, and then, class by class, the best of each: Viṣṇu among the Ādityas, the moon among the stars, the Sāma among the Vedas, the mind among the senses, the Himālaya among the mountains, the one syllable among words, the lion among beasts, the Gaṅgā among rivers, time among reckoners, death that takes all, the letter a, spring among seasons, the gambling of the cheat and the silence of secrets. The list ends by turning it into a rule for seeing: wherever there is anything glorious, beautiful or mighty, know that it comes from a spark of his splendour. And then he sets the whole list aside: what is the use of knowing so much? He stands holding up this whole world with a single fraction of himself.

The seven great seers of old and the four Manus, sharing my nature, were born from my mind. From them come all the creatures in the world.
Explanation
The words can also be divided differently: the seven great seers, the four still earlier ones, and the Manus. Either way the point is the same: the first fathers of all creatures were themselves born from God's mind.

Among the Vṛṣṇis I am Vāsudeva; among the Pāṇḍavas, Dhanañjaya. Among the sages I am Vyāsa, and among poets, the poet Uśanā.
Explanation
Vāsudeva is Kṛṣṇa himself, and Dhanañjaya is Arjuna. Kṛṣṇa names the person he is talking to among his own glories.

I am the rod of punishment of those who rule, and the wise policy of those who seek victory. Among secrets I am silence, and I am the knowledge of the wise.

There is no end to my divine manifestations, O scorcher of foes. What I have told of the spread of my glory is only a few examples.

Whatever being is glorious, beautiful or mighty, know that it is born of a mere spark of my splendour.
Explanation
This is the rule that makes the whole list usable. The examples cannot be complete, but wherever excellence appears, the mind can go straight from it to its source.

But what use is all this detailed knowledge to you, O Arjuna? I stand holding up this whole world with a single fraction of myself.
Explanation
After the long list, one sentence sums it up. The whole universe, with every glory in it, is only a small part of God, and he remains beyond it.

What comes later cannot see back to what came before it. The gods and sages came from him, so their knowledge cannot reach behind him.
