Chapter Eleven·The Yoga of the Vision of the Cosmic Form·Verses 1–55
Arjuna says his confusion is gone after hearing the last chapters, and asks, if it is possible, to see with his own eyes the sovereign form Kṛṣṇa has described. Kṛṣṇa agrees, but human eyes cannot see it, so he gives Arjuna divine sight. Sañjaya, who has been granted the same sight, describes to the blind king what appears: a form with countless mouths and eyes, ornaments and weapons, brighter than a thousand suns rising at once, with the whole universe standing in it, divided in countless ways. Arjuna, his hair on end, bows and speaks a hymn of what he sees. It begins in wonder: all the gods, Brahmā on his lotus, the sages and serpents, arms and eyes without end, no beginning, middle or end anywhere. It turns to terror: the three worlds tremble, the mouths blaze with fangs, and into them rush Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Karṇa, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the heroes of Arjuna's own side, some caught between the teeth with their heads crushed, like rivers pouring into the ocean or moths into a flame. Arjuna asks who this terrible one is. Kṛṣṇa answers that he is Time, grown mighty, come to destroy the worlds: even without Arjuna none of these warriors will survive. They are already slain by him; Arjuna is only to be the instrument. Arjuna, trembling, praises him again, and asks forgiveness for every time he treated him as a mere friend, calling him "Kṛṣṇa", "Yādava", "friend", joking with him at meals and at rest. Frightened, he asks to see the familiar four-armed form again. Kṛṣṇa shows it and then his gentle human form, and Arjuna's mind comes back to itself. Kṛṣṇa closes by saying that this vision cannot be won by Vedas, austerity, gifts or sacrifice, only by undivided devotion; and the one who works for him, holds him supreme, loves him, is free from attachment and has no enmity toward any being, comes to him.

Explanation
"The ancestors" translates a word meaning "drinkers of warm food": the ancestors were said to take only the warm part of the offerings made to them.

Therefore, bowing and laying my body down before you, I seek the grace of you, the Lord worthy of praise. As a father bears with a son, a friend with a friend, a lover with the beloved, so please bear with me, O God.
Explanation
The last pada is read in two ways: "a lover with the beloved", or, dividing the words differently, "a dear one with a dear one". The sense of close, forgiving love is the same.

I wish to see you as before, wearing a crown, bearing a mace, discus in hand. O thousand-armed one, whose form is the universe, take that same four-armed form.
Explanation
Some take "as before" to mean the four-armed form Arjuna already knew Kṛṣṇa to have; others take it as the form he had just glimpsed with crown, mace and discus at the start of the vision (11.17). Either way, it is a form he can bear to look at.

Having spoken thus to Arjuna, Vāsudeva showed him his own form again. Becoming once more gentle in form, the great one comforted him in his fear.

Whoever works for me, holds me supreme, is devoted to me, is free from attachment and has no enmity toward any being, comes to me, O son of Pāṇḍu.
Explanation
The chapter ends not on the vision but on a way of living. "No enmity toward any being" is striking right after a vision of war: even the one who must fight is to fight without hatred.
