The previous chapter ended with the vision of the cosmic form and the words that only single-minded devotion can see and reach the Lord. Arjuna now asks a plain question: who knows yoga better, those who worship Kṛṣṇa as a person with steady devotion, or those who worship the imperishable, unmanifest Absolute? Kṛṣṇa answers that those who fix their minds on him with faith are the most joined in yoga. Those who worship the Imperishable also reach him, but their road is harder, because the unmanifest is hard to hold for anyone who still identifies with a body. For the devotee he himself becomes the rescuer from the sea of death and rebirth. He then gives a ladder of practice, each step for one who cannot manage the one before: fix the mind on me; if you cannot, practise returning the mind to me again and again; if you cannot practise, do all your work for my sake; if even that is too much, give up the fruit of all actions. Giving up the fruit brings peace at once. The second half of the chapter, from verse 13 to the end, is a portrait of the devotee who is dear to the Lord: free of hatred, friendly and kind, without "mine" and "I", even in pleasure and pain, patient, content, one who neither disturbs the world nor is disturbed by it, free of craving and grief, the same to friend and foe, in honour and dishonour, in heat and cold, content with whatever comes, homeless yet steady in mind. Those who follow this nectar of dharma with faith are dearest of all.

Some devotees are always joined to you and worship you in this way. Others worship the Imperishable, the unmanifest. Of these two, who know yoga best?
Explanation
"In this way" points back to the last verse of the previous chapter, which praised the devotee who works for Kṛṣṇa and is devoted to him alone. The other group worships the Absolute without form or qualities.

If you cannot do even this, then take refuge in me, keep yourself in check, and give up the fruit of all actions.
Explanation
This step comes last, but it is not a lesser path; the next verse praises it above the others. It does not mean giving up action: keep doing your duties, but let go of craving and attachment for their results. Some join "taking refuge in me" to the first half instead: if you cannot do even this while relying on me, then give up the fruit.

But those devotees who follow this nectar of dharma just as it has been told, with faith, holding me as the highest, are exceedingly dear to me.
Explanation
The marks listed above come naturally to one who has reached the goal. For the seeker they are a practice to follow, and the one who strives for them with faith is dearer still.

"In this way" points back to the last verse of the previous chapter, which praised the devotee who works for Kṛṣṇa and is devoted to him alone. The other group worships the Absolute without form or qualities.
