Chapter One·The Origin of the World and of the Body·Verses 1–104
The opening paṭala sets the whole work in motion. It begins with homage to Śāradā, formed of the seven groups of letters. Then the frame story: at the end of a dissolution, Brahmā, Hari and Īśvara arise from Pradhāna and seek out the one being who can tell them their own origin; they find Śārṅgin reclining on the ocean of milk, praise him, and he reveals his own true form — described, strikingly, entirely in the feminine, bearing his own emblems of Kaustubha and Śrīvatsa. Bewildered, the gods ask "who are we, from what are we made," and are told they are born of Akṣara, the Imperishable. Asked what Akṣara is, the Supreme Light answers by naming the eternal triad — Prakṛti, Puruṣa and Kāla — and describes Prakṛti as subtler than the subtle, self-known, "I am she, you are she, everything knowable is she." Kāla is explained through its full unit-ladder, from the piercing of a lotus-petal up to a single day and the whole lifespan of Brahmā. Prakṛti, in the presence of pure consciousness, condenses into a Bindu, which splits into gross, subtle and supreme forms and is spoken of as Bindu, Nāda and Bīja; from it arises unmanifest sound, Śabda-brahman, and from that the whole edifice of creation unfolds — Mahat, Ahaṅkāra, the five subtle elements and gross elements each with its shape, colour and governing Śakti, the organs of knowledge and action, the inner instruments, and the traditional 25- and 24-tattva reckonings side by side with the guṇas. A closing verse insists that everything in this threefold world is bound to its counterpart. The paṭala then turns to embodied life: the four classes of birth (from a sprout, from sweat, from an egg, from a womb), and — at length — human conception, the mingling of the two sexual substances, the day-by-day growth of the embryo, the nāḍī system with all its named channels, and the rising of prāṇa through the body across a day and a year. It closes by naming manas, buddhi, ahaṅkāra and citta as one and the same power of Prakṛti, differently named by what she is doing in the moment — and ends on the image the whole paṭala has been building toward: that power striving to express itself is what brings the sound born from the Bindu to its full unfolding.

Śāradā's face, arms, feet and middle — so named — and her very heart are formed of the seven groups of letters: the vowels beginning with a, and the consonants beginning with ka, ca, ṭa, ta and pa. She is the eternal ruler of the whole universe, the source from which it all comes. May she grant purity to our minds.
