Chapter Two · Birth, the Winds of the Body, and the Fifty-Lettered Goddess · Verses 1–68

The second paṭala falls into two halves. The first continues paṭala 1's embryology: the fetus grows limb by limb, and at birth struggles through the Suṣumnā, gripped by its own agitated winds. The ten prāṇa-vāyus and their individual functions are named — breathing, blinking, belching, yawning, the sounds a body makes even after death — along with the seven bodily tissues, the three doṣas, and how digestion turns food into blood, sweat, urine and waste. The newborn's first cry is then traced through the four levels of speech: Parā, arising at the Mūlādhāra; Paśyantī; Madhyamā, at the heart with the Buddhi; and Vaikharī, finally articulate at the mouth. Bonds of affection form with mother, father and kin, and the memory of the womb's suffering and past karma begins to fade. The second half turns from body to mantra: a single power is multiplied in turn by three, four, five, six, seven, eight, ten, twelve and finally fifty, and at each stage she is shown differentiating a new layer of reality — the states of consciousness, the inner instruments, the elements, the bodily sheaths, the yantra, the worlds and directions, the nāḍīs, the zodiac. Along the way she is identified as Tāra (the syllable Oṃ) and as Hṛllekhā (Hrīṃ), each resolved into their own seven-part structure. Multiplied by fifty, she becomes the Devī herself, and through the sound rising in the hollow of the Suṣumnā she gives voice, row by row, to all fifty letters.

Multiplied tenfold, she differentiates the nāḍīs, the vital points, and the rest. And when she becomes twelvefold, she is then joined with the form of the zodiac signs and the sun.

And she then expresses the mantra called the twelve-syllabled one, and the twelve vowels as well; and the yantra of that same number then belongs to the Śakti in that multiplied form.

But when she becomes multiplied by fifty parts, she becomes the Devī herself, her divine nature now established within the Self. Through her contact with the sound that arises in the hollow of the Suṣumnā's own path, she gives voice, row upon row, to the full fifty letters.
