Chapter Eighteen·The Yoga of Freedom through Renunciation·Verses 1–78
The last chapter gathers the whole teaching together. Arjuna asks what renunciation (saṃnyāsa) is and what relinquishment (tyāga) is, and Kṛṣṇa answers that no one who has a body can give up action altogether: the real giving up is of attachment and of the wish for results. Sacrifice, charity and austerity are never to be dropped, because they purify. Action is then traced to five causes, of which the self is not one, so the one who thinks "I alone am the doer" sees wrongly, while one free of the sense of doership is not bound even by what he does. A long passage then sorts knowledge, action, the doer, the intellect, steadiness and happiness each into three kinds by the three guṇas, and shows that nothing in the world is free of them. The duties of the four orders are said to arise from each person's own nature, and a person who worships the Lord through his own work reaches perfection; one's own duty, even done imperfectly, is better than another's done well. The way from that perfection to Brahman is described: a pure intellect, self-control, solitude, light eating, meditation and dispassion, leading to supreme devotion, by which one knows the Lord as He is and enters Him. Kṛṣṇa tells Arjuna that his own nature will make him fight in any case, and that the Lord dwells in every heart. Then comes the most secret word: fix the mind on Me, be devoted to Me, give up all dharmas and take refuge in Me alone, and I will free you from all sins. The chapter ends with the rule for who may hear this teaching, the merit of teaching, studying and even hearing it, Arjuna's words that his delusion is gone, and Sañjaya's closing verses: wherever Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna stand together, there are fortune, victory, well-being and sound policy.

O mighty-armed one, O Hṛṣīkeśa, O slayer of Keśin, I wish to know the truth about renunciation, and about relinquishment, each separately.
Explanation
Both words have come up again and again in the earlier chapters, sometimes as if they meant the same thing. Arjuna asks for the difference between them before the teaching closes. Keśin was a demon in the form of a horse whom Kṛṣṇa killed.

The wise know renunciation as giving up actions done from desire. The discerning call relinquishment the giving up of the fruit of all actions.
Explanation
Two views are set side by side. In the first, certain actions themselves are dropped: those done to gain something, such as a rite for wealth or heaven. In the second, all actions go on, but the claim on their results is let go.

Some thinkers say that action should be given up as a fault. Others say that acts of sacrifice, charity and austerity should not be given up.
Explanation
The first group holds that every action binds, since even good works involve some harm, so the seeker should drop them all. The second holds that the sacred duties of sacrifice, charity and austerity must stay. Kṛṣṇa now gives his own settled view.

But giving up an action that is one's duty is not proper. Abandoning it out of delusion is called tāmasa relinquishment.
Explanation
Prescribed action means the daily and occasional duties that belong to one's station in life. Dropping them from confusion, thinking that neglect is spirituality, is the lowest kind of relinquishment.

The seat is the body. The doer is the ego that says "I act". The instruments are the senses, mind and intellect. The efforts are the movements of the vital breaths. The unseen power is the presiding deities of the senses, or the force of past actions working unseen.

This being so, one who, because his understanding is untrained, sees the pure Self alone as the doer, that man of poor understanding does not see.

The Self is not among the five causes. Taking the Self to be the one who acts is the basic mistake from which bondage follows.

One who has no feeling of "I am doing", whose understanding is not stained, even if he kills these people, does not kill and is not bound.
Explanation
This is not permission to kill. It describes one who truly sees that the Self does nothing. For such a person, whatever the body does is not his act. Arjuna is shown that the battle cannot stain one who fights without ego and without desire.

O son of Pṛthā, the unwavering steadiness by which, through yoga, one holds the workings of mind, breath and senses in check, is sāttvika.
Explanation

By worshipping, with his own work, Him from whom all beings come forth and by whom all this is pervaded, a man finds perfection.
Explanation

One whose mind is unattached everywhere, who is self-mastered and free of longing, attains through renunciation the supreme perfection of actionlessness.

Giving up all dharmas, come to Me alone for refuge. I will set you free from all sins. Do not grieve.
Explanation
This is the last and most secret word of the teaching. Some read "giving up all dharmas" as the renunciation of all works in the knowledge that the Self does not act; others read it as ceasing to rely on one's own works and merits and relying on the Lord alone. Neither takes it as a licence for careless neglect of duty. It also answers Arjuna's grief of chapter 1, where he feared the sin of the war: the One in whom he takes refuge takes that fear away.

You should never speak this to one without austerity, nor to one without devotion, nor to one who does not wish to hear, nor to one who finds fault with Me.
Explanation
The teaching is guarded not out of secrecy but because it helps only one who is ready. Given to a scoffer, it is wasted and may do harm.

Both words have come up again and again in the earlier chapters, sometimes as if they meant the same thing. Arjuna asks for the difference between them before the teaching closes. Keśin was a demon in the form of a horse whom Kṛṣṇa killed.
