The last chapter closed by making scripture the measure of right action. Arjuna now asks about people who do not follow the rules of scripture, yet worship with faith: what is their standing, sattva, rajas or tamas? Kṛṣṇa answers that faith is threefold, shaped by each person's nature, and that a person is made of faith: as one's faith is, so one is. The sāttvic worship the gods, the rājasic worship yakṣas and rākṣasas, the tāmasic worship ghosts and spirits. Those who torment their bodies in fierce austerities not ordained by scripture, full of hypocrisy and egotism, torment the Lord within as well, and have a demonic resolve. The rest of the chapter applies the three guṇas to everyday life. Food: sāttvic food increases life, strength, health and joy, and is juicy, rich, lasting and pleasing; rājasic food is bitter, sour, salty, very hot, pungent, dry and burning, and brings pain and illness; tāmasic food is stale, tasteless, putrid, left over and impure. Sacrifice: sāttvic sacrifice is offered as a duty, by the rules, with no desire for fruit; rājasic sacrifice is offered for reward or for show; tāmasic sacrifice ignores the rules, gives no food, has no mantras, no fee and no faith. Austerity is of body, speech and mind. Of the body: worship of gods, the twice-born, teachers and the wise, purity, straightness, celibacy and non-violence. Of speech: words that do not upset, true, pleasant and helpful, and daily recitation of scripture. Of mind: a clear mind, gentleness, silence, self-control and purity of heart. Done with faith and no desire for fruit it is sāttvic; done for respect and show it is rājasic and unstable; done in delusion, with self-torture or to harm another, it is tāmasic. Giving: sāttvic giving is given as a duty, to one who cannot repay, at the right place and time and to a worthy person; rājasic giving expects a return or is given grudgingly; tāmasic giving is given at the wrong place and time, to the unworthy, without respect and with contempt. Finally Kṛṣṇa names the threefold designation of Brahman: oṃ tat sat. Rites begin with oṃ; those seeking freedom act saying tat, without aiming at the fruit; sat marks what is real and good. Whatever is offered, given or done without faith is called asat, and is of no use here or hereafter.

Whatever is offered in the fire, given, practised as austerity or done without faith is called "Asat", O son of Pṛthā. It is of no use hereafter, nor here.

This answers Arjuna's opening question from the other side: without faith even correct rites bear no fruit.
